R1300 GS BMW 5/40 Oil

The ‘ check oil level ‘ warning came on yesterday. I contacted two of my most local dealers today and was told the same as TS, no BMW oil available, other than workshop use drums.

My oil level is just above the 1/2 way mark on the sight glass.

I hope by adding a small amount that it will prevent the warning coming on again.

The second dealership advised Halfords and getting an equivalent Specification 5-40, so a 1 litre bottle of Castrol Power 1 Ultimate for £9.66 was purchased.

Bike goes in for its second service in 6 weeks, hope oil situation is resolved by then.

Wtf stops a dealer selling you a litre of oil from there 50 gallon drum , ffs it is not your fault that they have stopped selling 1 litre bottles .

It's the way they're run in.

In extreme circumstances, that may be true, Especially on one race, one engine high performance engines. However, that's not the case with today's modern engines. Ref the BMW Opposing twin, It's simply the later engines are manufactured to higher tolerances.

Wanted some oil as a top up for my 2014 r1200gsa lc when in Austria , went into the local BMW Motorrad dealer in Kaprun and they filled me 1/2 litre into a small plastic pop bottle . Charged trade price for the oil

My 1150 used to use half a litre for every 1000 miles. Which was normal. However, none on my LC bikes since have never used any oil.

My 1150 was the last bike, or car, I’ve owned that needed topping up between services. But that was until I bought a 1300! When it went in for its last service the technician noted that the oil level was right at the bottom of the sight glass, the bike had only done 2000 miles since the last service. But according to BMW that is within spec!
