R60/2 steering lock

is bugging me because it doesn't work. Just not good enough!

It has a broken key stub in the barrel.

I've got the cover off, the barrel isn't corroded into the housing but I can't see how it's supposed to come apart. I can get a 1½ thou feeler gauge along the bottom of the barrel so apparently no tumblers holding it and a small Allen key does a similar job along the top of the tumbler housing.

Anybody fixed one or is it a locksmith job to see if the clever ones can pick out the key stub?

I've thought about getting another key cut and then cannibalising it so that it sits flush to the broken stub and may permit the barrel to then turn which may be the way to release it.

Any other ideas?

on my r100gs the key is used to get the lock barrel out. i broke the key in my steering lock and just drilled it out and the got a new lock barrel and key

The barrel on mine comes right out with the key in it, I understand this is what it's suposed to do.
Can you not superglue something to the end of the barrel and pull it out? superglue solvent to remove the 'something' when the barrel is out. You can then work on the barrel.

Fine dental or jewellery tweezers, the ones with the 'grippy inside' bit, just to get the tips of the tweezers onto the key and then a pair of pliers to grip the tweezers as close to the key as possible. It may need a bit of jiggling backwards and forwards if its been in there a while but it should come out. Worked for me in the past

Drill it out and buy a new one I've lived in Scotland over 25 years, I'll try the cheaper options first

I've only got part of a broken key in there Bill and one or more of the tumblers is still holding it in place. I don't know if the stump is fully inserted or not. Ohh err missus.

That may well do the trick, I'll need to find someone with jewellery pliers.

a timely thread. I was just about to get my frame shot blasted and forgot about the steering lock. How do you get the rivet for the cover out of the frame? And then how do you get the lock out .. with no key I guess drilling is the only option?

Update

Proff informed me that the tumblers have multiple positions not just in or out. With that knowledge I sat down with a small bladed Swiss Army Knife and a screwdriver.

I used the knife blade to lift the tumbler outboard of the key stub progressively whilst applying intermittent turning force on the screwdriver. In less than two seconds the barrel turned at which point I was so surprised that the screwdriver slipped out and the barrel returned to its rest location. Ten minutes muttering later I managed to reproduce the desired effect and out came the barrel.

The key remnant wasn't for moving so I decided to dismantle the lock assembly.

I carefully inserted my trusty knife point under the metal strip on the tumbler block until I had something to grip with fine pliers. Covering the strip with my finger I extracted the strip and even managed to retain all five of the tiny springs. Ithen inverted the barrel and tapped it in a hard plastic tray to get the 5 tumblers out. Wrong! I know had 10 tumblers of various sizes. and 5 holes into the barrel. The finest jewellers screwdriver was used through each hole to work out the key stub. Success, now to put it back together.

Using the key alinged along the outside of the barrel I worked out the likely combination of tumblers having decided out that it was the mostly larger ones with the pointed ends that went into the key profile and that the ends away from the key had to be in a straight line if the lock was to open. The smaller ones were positioned to give even pressure on the springs.

Miraculously I got it right first time although a couple spring launches onto a concrete garage floor interupted proceedings for some time.

I eventually wised up and only put the springs in place one at a time and held them down whilst I slid the metal retaing strip back into place. It's tight and I used a pair of adjustable grips, gently.

Re-assembled, inserted to the frame housing and hey presto I have a fully functioning steering lock.

This is particularly good as I needed to lock the handlebars in place whilst I undo the covers and cap nuts to drop the forks one at a time to replace the gaiters.

One evening two jobs, success and onto the Vino Tinto

He doesnt explain how to get the cover off but there is a thumbnail image of him drifting it off. It's held with a brass rivet driven into a hole in the lock housing. I got mine off by using two flat screwdriverrs and levering between the cover and the housing. Take it easy, the cover is only chromed brass.

Don't drop the rivet with the spring washer on it, the washer will instantly disappear into a black hole. DAMHIK.
