R65 GS restoration

Hiya Hairheads,
I got myself a garage and it's time to start my first ever restoration project.
A R65 GS from 1991 with 48000 kms on the clock. P1010141 2.jpg
It looks and runs a bit rough. Starts first time with the choke on though.

What I would like to do is take it apart, repaint the frame, front forks, tank, rocker covers, fit a new main loom, give the engine and carburators a good clean up...

Now, as some might have noticed from my previous threads, I'm not much of a mecanic... Got the Haynes BMW Twins 1970-1988, Clymer BMW R-Series 1970-1994 (generously donated by Bill H, thanks again) and a lot of motivation. I'm sure it will be a great learning experience. Be honest, is that too ambitious??
Any advice would be welcome on how to take it apart, where to start, main maintenance things to do, parts to change on a bike with that mileage... For example: What's going on there?

Oil is not dripping or pouring out, always been there since I got the bike...

Looking forward to another shower of wisdom

Possible base 'gasket' has gone or it is the pushrod tube rubbers...both require the same action to repair ( incidently most just clean oil off every now and then unless it gets bad etc :thumb2 )

Pic attached of my bits for my R100g/spd which I'm hoping to do with the next week or so ( and hopefully post a few pics for you:) )

'Tired' back from doing a ten mile cycle yesterday........so hopefully later this week is when I'll have a go at it. I've already loosened the appropriate downpipe so that'll save me taking the whole system off !
Start soaking the flange nuts with a little Plus Gas ( also do the same to all the bolts if you are going the whole hog ..especially the engine mounting bolts )
Incidently, that exhaust is about £275 to buy ( I think it is called a Sato ) so clean it up and re-paint it...much nicer sound than an original:thumb2
 
Hi Vincent. That looks like one of the ex French Police machines. Where did you get it from?

Don't worry about being a mechanical novice.

My brother 'who couldn't keep a car running for more than 18 months before it'd give up and die' bought a 1943 Willis Jeep in quite poor condition 'running but only just'.
Over the next year he did a full ground up restoration almost entirely by himself.
He ended up with a fully operational and completely original vehicle that even drove in a straight line.

If he could do something like that I'm quite sure you'll have the 650 in excellent condition without too much grief. There are plenty of people on here and other sites who will gladly offer any amount of advice.

good luck with it and don't forget to keep the camera handy and update the threat so we can follow your progress. :thumb2

Bin there done that, R65 got me back on the biking in '96.

Carb diaphragms split, easy to change. Get new screws with the diaphragms to be sure you can finish the job in one shot.
Float bowls have small hole in the bottom of a chamber in one corner, feeds the starting jet, make sure it is clear.
Float bowl gasket must be tight for starting jet to work (vacuum).
Coils crack - replace.
Multi-pin plugs under the tank - clean, check, slight vaseline, close.
Chain tensioner - replace - easy-peasy but take care.
Fork oil seals - piece of cake.

OL...what you need kenny is a sito exhaust
whats the main difference between the sito and marving then?
is the end cap aluminium.
the french bikes look like the sito.
 
Here's, ahem, one of my bikes with the Sito..and a pic of my Marving....marving is all steel :) Both sound nicer than stock :bounce1

my name is Klaus. I am from Germany and just found via google this site.

I am also the owner of a R 65 GS Ex-Gendamerie. I bought it last year. Before for i had the R 65 GS with 27 Hp.

I had a lot of paperwork to do to get the bike in Germany registraded. So if you have any questions just post me a small note.

is there much involved in changing the push rod tubes.the ones on my st are very rusty looking but not leaking should i just paint them or can they be got in stainless
 
Stainless ones are best, use new rubber seals.
make sure you have new head gasket etc.
It is possible to do them without removing barrels.

A drift is preferred way of removing old tubes..
