R80/7 for sale…..

Put this here for the airhead fans, mods feel free to move to bikes for sale.

A mates father has a tidy R80/7 in unmolested original condition on historic registration, he is interested in selling and asked if I could post it on here. It’s V reg and navy blue with alloys and has done 45,000 miles. Starts and runs nicely, he’s pretty fastidious but reckons it would benefit from new tyres and inner tubes.

He’s unsure what to ask for it, I will put up some pics over the weekend and ask the collective wisdom what they think it’s worth and if anyone might be interested in it.

Bike is based in Stubbington, Hampshire, I can put anyone interested in touch with the owner. I’d consider it for myself but I have no more space in my garage.

That looks in fine condition. Not high miles either…… a good buy for someone at the right price
 
What is “the right price” ? A ballpark figure will do.

I’m no classic airhead fan but I ride boxer BMWs so they’ve asked me to help sell the bike on. I’d like them to get what the bikes is worth, not get robbed by some shark for a quick profit.

I know the bike was laid up at the back of my mates uncles garage for years, then his dad recently inherited it and cleaned it up as a project. Poor health prevents him from enjoying it so he would like to sell it on to somebody that would appreciate it.

I’d love it for myself but I have no room for it.
 
You're right. The round, oval ones went out with the end of the /6 series. Subsequent airheads had the squarer shape tappet covers. It shouldn't put any potential buyer off unless they are seriously anal! It's not a big deal to swap them over and many prefer the rounder profile.
 
I don’t think the original owner, my mates uncle, was the kind of bloke to mess around and swap bits or add farkles. He had an original fire blade in the garage along with the beemer, again totally stock.

Could it be that this bike was built during a changeover period where both the round and flat covers might have been fitted during production depending on the month of assembly ?

If you check it out on the Gov MOT check site, its last ticket expired in 2012. It hardly turned a wheel between 2006-12.

Nope. It's much more likely that a previous owner simply preferred that look. Or possibly, someone dropped it at a standstill or at a low speed, cracked one and replaced them with a sh pair of the older type.

It's no big deal. I'd have it in a heartbeat. It's worth £3k any day of the week. If it was me, I'd start at £3.75k and haggle from there.
 
Thanks Pete, that’s the kind of ballpark figure I was hoping for, he had it very much undervalued in his head and I don’t want to see him ripped off.

I haven’t seen this bike yet myself but the current owner is my best mates dad and they are local to me (I was originally considered for it but then it went to my mates dad.)

If anyone wants me to take pictures/video on my iPhone of the bike for them I can do that, or FaceTime me whilst I am there, serious buyers only please no tyre kickers as my time is precious to me.

Not a good example of putting the correct valve cover on the correct side, though! ;) Rookie error.
I see it is a US Spec bike. and has (probably) a Dynatec ignition system. Fork brace upgrade, Telefix-type. Wire wheels and looks pre-1981.

I note the OP bike (R80/7) has the post-81 rear light but maintains many pre-81MY features (under-tank master cylinder, ATE brakes, aluminium air filter cover). The flat-top carbs were a feature of 1978 (so a quick internet search tells me). The rev-counter is also pre-1981 If I was thinking about buying the bike I would check if it has matching numbers and go from there. There is evidence of a 'Bitza' but also open to the idea that it is a time-warp bike (ie, built at a time when new things started to come out but parts bin had old stock still). But the valve covers are a definite /6 item and a cosmetic modification only.

It’s a normal 1979 spec bike with the front brake fluid reservoir under the tank. The small rear light lens stopped in 1978. The bikes ignition will have points in a bean can.

I stand corrected about the rear light. One learn something new every day! Many thanks.
 
As I said earlier, to the best of my knowledge based on what my mate has told me, the original owner wasn’t a tweaker, he just rode it and then laid it up for many years. The bike is most likely an unmolested example.

If anyone wants to know about “matching numbers” or anything else, I can find out easily enough next week.
