R80 G/S Headlamp/speedo replacement

I need to replace the speedo in my 1984 R80 G/S headlamp console. Before I fork out £150 plus on a new unit I wonder if anybody has tried upgrading both the headlamp and speedometer and what results were achieved. I'm going to be using the bike for long distance MCC trials and want to maximise the available lighting.

I'm tempted to keep the R80 as standard as possible however [it just looks so right] - Does anybody have a spare speedometer or complete headlamp unit please?

Hi

Be careful upgrading the lighting. If you add a lot more current demand you are going to need to upgrade the alternator, regulator and diode board as well.

Would prefer to keep it standard. Does anyone have a speedo for sale or swop?

Speedos are difficult to find. A mate of mine has the same problem as me - speedos reading fast! It's a problem with a spring that damps the needle's movement. A bloke in Germany can fix it for £150 or you can buy a new speedo for £150. Easy choice!

We're going to try riding all 3 trials next year on our G/Ss. We used to do the Edinburgh on G/Ss. He still does it and the Land's End.

PS Keep your G/S standard - it's worth an awful lot more if you don't mess with it.

As far as I know and from my Bikes the following is true

R80GS MPH/KPH = W1244
R80GS Basic MPH/KPH = W1244
R80G/S MPH/KPH = W1244

3.36 (RATIO 37.11 =SPEEDO 1.244)

i.e. The speedo head on the R80G/S is the same as the one on the R80GS and R80GS Basic – it is made by MotoMeter for BMW and is marked W1244

The numbering convention was changed in the 80s and then it would have been marked 1.244

It is a MPH/KPH Speedo head and mates to the 3.36 which is the Ratio 37.11 ratio rear bevel box of the 800cc engined Bikes, sometimes written as 37/11 rear bevel drive

I'll post it to you for £120
