How can you tell a real pd from a standard g/s apart from all the obvious things that you can see as in big tank single seat and rack etc

What i mean is if it looks like a pd how can you be sure

Frank as far as I know, the PD parts were a kit that was fitted by the dealer. So any bike that has all the bits is a PD. If the PD's are now 10k, I would be tempted to buy a new PD tank for my g/s! I have everything else.

Well same as that my bike has all the bits but civil thinks its not a proper pd but they are all dealer not factory specials thats why i was wondering was there a special register or something
Tanks were 1000 quid but can be got cheaper

I haven't seen a Pd tank for sale in years Frank. Must be more vigilant.

Three Wise men ,

There doesnt seem to be too much actual factual info out there . And i am Too Young to Know.
The only Guys old Enough to Know are Rob Farmer & Colt .

This is as much as i can Glean from Micapeak , Which SAYS NOTHING about dealer fitted parts.
I must Have a Rumble in the OEM Parts Fiche , to see if there is any Frame number Differences
This i Can tell thee ,,, There is a G/S PD .

R 80 G/S Paris Dakar
R80G/S PDR80G/S PD tank with Gaston Rahier's signature
R80G/S PD tank with Gaston Rahier's signature

In 1984, BMW present the first "Africa" enduro bike, the R 80 G/S Paris Dakar. The differences vs. a R 80 G/S are:

a bigger steel tank (32 lit./8.9 gal.) with Gaston Rahier's signature on it
a solo seat with a fixed luggage rack (to get under the seat, all the seat/rack unit have to be removed)
no plastic side panel (the battery is visible)
a stainless steel exhaust with a black cover plate
a 12v/20Ah battery in place of a 12v/16Ah
the weight : 205 kg
engine torque value of 58 Nm at 4000 rpm vs: 56,7 Nm at 5000 rpm

dont forget proff and the others are way older than me:rob

well there was no certificate.no register that i know of.
they will post 1983 models.with the parts as listed on micapeak.
if you have a trawl you will find a bit more.

as alreeady said they are listed as an optional extra in the catalogues.
so you could order your own spec.
apart from models supplied with the full kit on.
I suppose the only provenance (if you are that bothered) would be a sales bill with the bike reg on?

the only bit i have never been sure of is::confused:
engine torque value of 58 Nm at 4000 rpm vs: 56,7 Nm at 5000 rpm.

Thanks for all of the links, help and advice. No didn't get the eBay one, it went over my max budget. Which allowed for shipping registration, hassle factor and having a punt on an unseen bike. But still a very good looking bike.
Gary's bike looks in great nick, in for a penny, I might as well go look. I can already feel the pain.
