ok

spoke to Roger (Thunder) this evening about a "problem" with the twin disk set up on my 80 mono Paris Dakar..

have had the front wheel out to replace the split fork gaiter and do some deep cleaning:thumb

however..

on re-assembly i have noticed a quite disturbing situation with the front twin disk set up...

look at the photo, the wheel spindle passes thro the right fork leg, it steps down in dianeter near the wheel, and there is a spacer tween "step" and wheel bearing

what is the problem?

well the thing is.. the right fork leg is not locked in position against any stop (spacer) when the spindle nut is tight against the left fork leg.

the right fork leg can be moved along the spindle to "any position " if the pinch bolt on the fork leg is released

(in other words the wheel spindle is the same diameter both sides of the fork leg and can be slid along the spindle and nipped up in any position by the pinch bolt)

help!!!!!!!!!!

this is not easy to explain... but its wrong!

On the faux g/sPD.. I had equal spacers both sides ( spacer plus a washer ). I didn't do the conversion and it is bloody tight when removing the wheel etc...but no play whatsoever in the wheel :thumb2

PS All bolts and spokes were stainless when I sold her:augie

These wheels have tapered roller bearings that have to be shimmed up correctly to get the preload on the bearings right. there's a spacer between the bearings in the hub and another that pulls up against the right hand fork leg. If you get it wrong the bearings fail in no time at all. I've known one kill both bearings in less than 3 thousand miles. You don't just whack these bearings in they have to be torqued and shimmed properly.

Have a read - http://www.airheads.org/content/view/220/98/

Welcome to the wonderful world of Monolever ownership :thumb2

The various shims are here Tapered bearing Shims

I've had a few glasses of vino so this will probably all be jaberwokie when I read it back in the morning...

sounds ok to me.
i have a twin disc set up on my g/s.
i messed with the spacers and locked the spacers tight against the fork leg.
thinking this held it all nice and tight.

till a mate explained how i had fecked the bearinings up:blast
its the pinch bolts that hold the spindle and wheel on properly.
rather than fully tighten on up the spindle bolt/nut.

i had pushed the pulled the fork leg and spacers tight against the bearing.
as rob says they are tapered,so i had loaded them up and wore them out.

so lots of attempts to get it right.
thankfully i had help from him and briano:thumb2

Rob and Colt are right ( pains me to admit it ) ....I tightened mine up until there was no play in the bearings, then locked the spindle with the fork/spindle bolts and everything worked just fine :thumb2

Right, I have a plane to deliver.....

yes i am aware of the taper bearings... tightening the spindle nut does put the bearings under compression due to the wee spacer on the right side between the step in the spindle and the wheel

my query relates to the fact

just undoing the right pinch bolt means i can move the fork leg side to side along the axis of the spindle? (enough to allow the rivets on the disk to contact the fork leg)

is this the case on yours?

update...

had a look at Colts 80 G/S today, identical twin disk set up as mine..

its the same as mine.. it does not have a spacer either:nenau

so maybe it should be that way:nenau from an engineering/common sense point of view

its wrong:blast

I'm 99% certain the other bike did not use a spacer either.

You ain't going to sleep at nights thinking about it though :rob
