Everywhere I dont really want to be...
Well my R80 GS PD arrived on Saturday (piccies to follow when SHMBO is not around...)

Ive been pricing up a future 1000cc upgrade...and have a few questions.

I read somewhere that a 1000cc conversion kit has more torque with the 32mm Bings than with the 40mm bing carbs normally associated with the r100. Is there any credance to this ?

Also, What is the difference between upgrading from 800cc to 1000cc using an "R80 1000cc upgrade kit" and the "1070cc Big bore kit" normally only associated with R100's...anyone know why I can't fit the 1070 Big bore kits to an R80...since my understanding is that the only difference is the piston sizes ??:nenau

Cheers..

I left the 32mm carbs on when I put 1000 RS barrels/pistons on my GS....went like the proverbal off a shovel. Siebenrock kit has lighter pistons etc but these came on another bike already fitted.

i recently fitted a siebenrock kit to an R80G/S. against my expectations, it now goes like stink and the owner is very happy with the increase in go :)
only problem is that it needs higher gearing rather badly. the standard bike already feels well undergeared IMO, but the extra power makes it even more noticeable. i think Para R80GS is higher geared as stock.

the reason that it would need the 1000cc kit for an R80 is because it is designed to work with R80 heads and 32mm carbs.
i've not seen one, but i guess the 1070 kit will require R100 heads and 40mm carbs :nenau

The 32mm carbs suit the GS far more than the 40mm. You're much better off with them, makes bugger all difference to the top end and gives more mid range. They tickover much better as well.

The 1000cc final drive would be a good option as well but you will also need a speedo to go with it.

Not sure but I suspect the 1070 conversion needs too much meat taking out of the heads to get it to fit. Your valves will be too small as well.

Rather than going for the 1070, theres an issue with the pistons used in the 1070 conversion apparently, you'd be better off fitting Richie Moores long rod conversion (www.moorespeed.co.uk)

I have had a Seiben rock fitted for the last few years with the smaller carbs. Another spin off is they seem to stay in sync for longer as well. I agree as well that the mid range seems better than with the bigger carbs but........I don't think its as quick as a 100GS. I'm looking to get mine a bit more meaty and don't know which way to go. My options are:
1, Stay with the 80 Seibenrocked to 100 and gas flow the heads fit bigger valves. less restirictive zorst and airfilter. Is it a better idea to use 100 heads as the 80 heads are a compromise when used with the conversion?
2, Get another 1000cc engine and fit the Moorespeed kit.
3, Get the 1000cc engine and get it done by either Moorespeed or A.N.other.
I don't want to be faster (top speed) than the bike is now, just want the motor to feel stronger. I really don't want a more modern bike as everyone and his dog now seems to have jumped on the "Adventure Bike" trend now. Espesh out in Germany, I never liked the idea that someone turns up at the next traffic light with exactly the same bike as you.
I am close to say F&*K it and buy the second engine and have a no expense spared engine job, I did the same to a DR600 a long time ago and kept the bike 15 years. I wonder how much it would cost. The rest of my bike is spot bollock so don't want to sell the old girl, plus every time I get rid of an airhead I end up buying another one coz I missed it. An I i'll?

..Well Im not looking for it to go faster...seems perfectly adequate in the speed department as it is. Actually I was rather surprised in the "all round ability" on Saturday coming home from Zurick. It was adequate on the Autoroutes, handling the speed limit comfortably...and then a very quick bimble in the forest trails showed it to be light(er) and more nimble than my 1150GSA...

Like you I'm just looking for a little more "oomph" from about 2000rpm onwards. I've got a lot of things to do before the upgrade (single seat, front shocks, TKC's, 320 brakes, rocker covers etc)...as well as making time for all the normal stuff that life throws at you (AKA SWMBO)

My current thinking (after reading all your usefull responses..) is that Ill probably just go the Siebenrock 1000cc upgrade path and leave the 32mm Bings in place for the time being. It is just for my tinkering and s*%t - kicking any hows...

Cheers

The Siebenrock 800 to 1000 kit installation can be considerably improved with a little machining...............I've machined the heads out to 1000......4mm wider IIRC, machined the squish band off the heads and the step off the pistons and the shortened the barrels to put the compression ratio back up..............the difference is worth all the time and trouble, it runs much smoother, ticks over better and puts a silly grin on the face of everybody that's ridden it ........................(which is why I wouldn't sell it to Kenny!)

Are you still using the 32mm Bings then ???

(Maybe it would be useful if this modification was docuimented somewhere here for others to follow ?)

Would this modification require a specilaist machine shop...or could "anyone" with access to a lathe (?) and /or milling machine (and suitable machining knowledge) be able to accomplish this ?

Yes still on 32mm Bings, much better than my PD which is on 40mm.

All the machining was done on a lathe for the pistons and the barrels and milling machine for the heads.............none of it was too difficult............I did it!

Hello Flytoolow

I have a high compression cylinder set that I want to sell (10.5:1). This set is used aprox 10 000kms and works very well. It’s running with customized piston rings to optimize pressure.
I get with a standard heads and standard camshaft a cylinder pressure of 11-12bar
The lighter pistons are from Wosner and the shorter nikasil barrels from MAHLE. (I will add the copper gaskets that I’m currently using.)
The shorter stainless steel push rod tubes are included and also the modified shorter push rods
I will sell this kit for 600euros and ship at cost

If you are interested please let me know

Well thanks for the offer, but I'm not yet in the position to start tearing it apart..
