I am replacing the rear crank seal on my 84 R80G/S.
The tool I have is in 2 parts;the mandrel part No111882 and a spacer which fits over the mandrel part No111881.
What I need to know is do I use the spacer to acheive the correct depth or not.I beleive the setting of the depth for the seal is critical.

Did you get sorted? When I fitted my seal I just measured the depth of the original seal and tapped the new one down to the same depth.

agreed

That is what I will do.I measured the original, it is 14.72 mm

Please secure the crank before attempting to replace the rear seal.

Take the front cover off, and put a chock of wood ( approx half inch thick) on the alternator rotor, then gently tighten back the front cover. it's to stop the crank moving forward as you work on the rear. If it moves forward, the crank thrust washers can fall off their mounting pins and lock the engine. You'll also have to take the engine apart and rebuild it if they do fall off.

this isn't scaremongering, if you've done the job in the past and got away with it, consider yourself lucky, they do fall off frequently
