Dear all, I’d like to run my 85 R80g/s without side panels. For looks and because they fall off.

The problem is the heat protection if I have a passenger. I consider to mount a heat shield (the one from the PD version).

Options: Mount PD heat shield in standard muffler (but how)? Or add a PD muffler on my standard g/s as much as muffler is rusty anyway. The PD muffler seems to have mounting brakets for the heatshield. But does it fit a standard g/s?

Anybody has gone down that rabbit hole?

The silencers for R80 G/S and the Paris Dakar version are interchangeable. Although the silencer for the paralever models looks similar they don’t fit easily. I’ve ridden G/S models without the side panels nor heat shield without mishap.

This is a friend's G/S that has a paralever silencer and side panel fitted - he hadn't noticed - but there are signs!

It seemed to work OK in terms of fitting overall, but the paralever silencers have a second rearward mounting bracket that looks a bit odd, unless you blank it with a bolt to make it look less obvious.

Also not that the upper pannier rail arms sit further forward on the G/S and the GS side cover then sits underneath the first arm, which in my friend's case was pushing the plastic cover onto the silencer and causing it to melt, a bit, at the very end.
His G/S has Hepco and Becker pannier rails, it may be not quite the same with OEM G/S rails but it could be..... they look very similar in photos

I’ve got a left side panel if you want it…. Postage might be the only problem to brussels

That was really really helpful guys, thank you so much. So I can get optimally a g/s PD exhaust in plan b a gs exhaust and mount them - and then add the heatshield. Many thanks!

I’ve got a spare left hand side panel ( the right made a break for freedom on the road, and was last seen heading for Switzerland!)
Give me a shout if you want it. Can take pictures if needed.
