R80st rocker cover

I'm looking at buying a r80st from 1984 but the rocker covers for this look different to the majority of others I have see and I wondered if anyone could shed light on the difference between engines.

This rocker cover for the one I have seen has a design which almost appears to have separated the areas of the inlet and outlet valves into 2 hemispheres and has 2 horizontal fins between them. The covers have the same colour metal as the rest of the engine.

however the rocker covers on others I have seen online have a black, more modern 'flat' looking design, with 4 well defined horizontal bright coloured lines on them.

Any thoughts?

The ST would originally have had the newer squarer ones.

They are completely interchangeable. Popular word is that the modern ones are stonger, and a bit quieter too. Personally I have no idea if thats true, I have run various airheads with either and dont really notice any difference. The engines are noisy regardless!

I have a R80ST... originally came with the black new style covers.... but I prefer the looks of the old style "peanut" rocker covers.

So I have a pair of the original style rocker covers if you want them
(they will need a clean and re-paint)

Having been "down the road" a couple of times on airheads I can confirm that the later rockers are much stronger. The round ones tend to pop quite easily and fracture inside. The square ones just get chewed up.

Some of the peanut replicas wont survive a fall of the side stand - as thin as a cheap Easter egg and not a lot stronger was how I have seen them described.
The square ones will survive 50 yards down the road at 80 km/hr -----.
