Hi,
I have a 2004 R850R who's battery died on me over winter as I moved house and forgot to charge it. I have a new battery installed but the clock has decided not to play ball and won't run. Ive looked at the fuse (no3) and it seems fine, just in case I swaped it out for the spare in the tool bag. But still no luck.
Any thoughts?
Thanks for reading

would it not have a battery itself? Otherwise its a) draining your battery or b) time will be wrong each time you switch it off. Just a thought

If you have no clock when ignition is off, but a clock when it's switched on, you likely have one of two problems. First is the fuse, second is a break in the live feed wire, which can be a right pain to locate.

survey says... A.

it gets a permanent live feed from battery.

is the whole rider info display not working (fuel, temp etc) or just the clock?

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. As Cyrano says the clock is analog. It doesn't work in all cases, not with the ignition on, motor running, or when its parked up!
I haven't noticed another electrical issue at the RDI yet as the indicators, neutral, battery, oil, lights come on as they normally do.
Has anyone opened up the clock at the back?
Thanks
Dewi

There is no RID on a 850 R. Just a clock with good old hands.

and now dont i feel like a royal tit :D

assumed they all had a RID. never had or worked on an 850R. every day is a school day.

good luck tracing your issue Dewi.

So, I took out the clock and attached it to a 12v battery I have and the clock runs fine! I also changed the 15a fuse (F3) again, just in case there was an issue there. Reattached the clock and still no luck! I have the Haynes manual for the R850, 1100 and 1150 and in there are wiring diagrams which to a degree I can follow. Well, enough to see that the socket connection is also wired up via the same F3 fuse and that works fine. So i think I'm down to a wiring issue, but I don't fully understand the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual and what all the numbers mean or what a DIN terminal is and where you find them?
On the electrical wiring diagram in the Haynes manual the junction between the socket connection which is a 1.5mm red and white wire meets the clock wire (also red and white but a 0.5mm wire) at '30 a3'. Is that a plastic connector junction? Also what does the number 1 mean at the ends of the wire?
Sorry to ask so many questions. I have a photo of the wiring diagram, but can't see where to add it to the post.
Hope you can help

30 at G3 is probably a crimped connector, buried in the loom, most likely in the fuse box.

When they manufacture the looms, they work back from the connector and where all the same colour wires need to be joined, they gather them together and crimp them. They can be found at various places around the wiring loom, some in the fuse box, some in the instrument loom. .

Before you reconnected your clock, did you check for power at the clock connector?
I’m guessing white/black could be for the clock internal light. (Pin1)
Red/white would be power. (Pin 2)
Check them against a good ground, and if they’re OK, then check them against the connectors earth (pin 3). Could be your earth is all corroded. There is a history of water getting into the instrument wiring loom and corroding the wiring. I think the crimp for the brown/earth is in the instrument loom. On your diagram 31 at C4/5.

Good luck
Ian

These are great for finding wiring or Earth faults on motor vehicles, nothing can go bang either

You just connect to the battery and use the probe to give either 12v or Earth

Best tool ever for auto electrics work

Also check for a good ground connection on that sub loom If you haven't used the bike and the common earth point has corroded ???

Also buy a tin of ACF 50 and check clean and apply the ACF50 to the connectors
