r850 models help

well thats lot cash just for rare bike, although heard 850gs meant be lot better in the dirt.

think will go look at the 850r as lower miles but also fast may have less work to do. my concern with high milage one is weight and fact that he admits needs work done so could end up doing lot to get it reliable

when they come up for sale.. which is rare, they tend to sell for a higher price than the same 1100. Stoke motorcycles had two last summer. one was on for £3500 the other for a shade under £4K. both sold rather quickly. (they were both in fantastic condition mind.

I think that's right. I fancied a change earlier this year and was offered £3,500 trade-in at a stealers. Mind, some of them try to tell you that there's no demand for 850GSs.

well rang to view both bikes, both sold over weekend, well for 1k what did i expect

Keep an eye out, there is always more...

Well I have an 850GS, by far the best Boxer I've had, although I think it has more to do with much lower initial cost than the 1150GS or 1100RS I had before, and therefore lower expectations being well surpassed. It has been totally reliable so far unlike either of the other too 'character filled' bikes!!

I will say that I probably wouldn't have considered the 850 though if it wasn't for the dealer giving me an 850R as a loan bike when the 1150 was in for more warranty(!!) work some years back. I had a day out with a couple of mates on it and was amazed how much fun it was and how comfortable. I reckon it's probably the best seat I've ever sat on on a bike.

I do fear you'll need to find some extra dosh though, £1k is not going to get you much of any bike, let alone an oilhead beemer. An 850R will always be the cheapest option, but 11R's can be had for very similar money. You'll be looking at some real shoddy bikes, and very possibly ex courier ones as well.

If you're happy that an 850 will be quick enough for you two up then in reality you'll never really see any advantage of the full fairing on the RT as you won't be quick enough to make proper use of it. And it will be slow with all the extra weight it carry's. Must be about 60kg heavier I reckon :nenau

well another 850r popped up today, actually looks to be same bike that sold but being sold by new owner. well for 1k dont think will get lot but the 1100r and 1100rt make stupid money here, 4k euro min for the rt over here. there is even an 02 850rt for 7k up for sale with over 90k on the clock.

well reality is i wont be going fast with my wife on the back as pillion riding is new to me as well. but as long as has enough poke for over taking and cruises nicely i dotn mind as not expecting sports bike performace.

John - just my two pennys-worth.

I have a 2004 R850R at the moment - with the 6 speed gearbox. Great bike, and I love it. Sold a 1996 R850R to buy this one - the 96 model had the 5 speed box - and I must say I do prefer it with the 5 speed box - more zippy.

Very economical - well over 50mpg - but had you considered a K75? I recently bought an '88 K75S - and what a little peach!! 60mpg - soooo smooth - and surprisingly zippy - quoted top speed over 120mph.

In fact, I like it so much, I'm buying a K75RT in a couple of weeks!!

Do try one if you get the chance - I think you'll be impressed.

Mike

cheers must look at them now to see whats for sale around this side

so you preferred the 5 box over the newer 6 box is it?

Hey, if we are talking k's then K100's are probably the best value for money BM. Regular sub £1000 and plenty to choose from. Many are rough hacks but one which is reasonable is easy to look after if you know how and should be very reliable for big miles.

looking aroinf here but they stillpricey this side of the pond.

going keep good eye out andpounce on 1st 1100 or 850 i spot

Someone said the 850GS's are rare. Well, I passed a black one on the northbound A2 this morning at about 7:30.

Clearly 1150RT's are faster....

....at least when playing the traffic filtering video game I've let myself fall into.

I see loads of the K75's, 100's knocking around London. They seem to hold up well and just keep on going.

Happy bike hunting.

Regards

John, I'm going to send you a pm. I've an r850r here and she needs a little work but you should check it out... It might suit your pocket and I'm desperate to get some space
