Hello everyone,

I have a 2000 Reg, 27000 mile R850GS, and I have just done an oil change on the engine, gearbox and final drive. Whilst letting the bike tick over for a short period post the 'service', I noticed what appears to be a noisy drive shaft. I ran the bike in 1st & 2nd gear and the noise is still there. I have spun the rear wheel backwards and there is no noise. Maybe it's been there all along and this is the first time I've noticed it? Is this a normal phenomena with this bike? Should I be concerned? Many thanks in advance.

Mac.

If you ran it on the centre stand then they all clack and knock as the ujs are running at extreme angles.
So don't do it.
Also don't let the bike run stationary for too long unless you have a large fan blowing on it.

Hi Flatdog,

Many thanks for the advice. Noted. It won't happen again. I appreciate your help.

Do you mean when ticking over in neutral? That won't be the driveshaft.
If you pull-in the clutch does it stop or change? That's the clutch release bearing. Nothing to worry about.

Hi TWG, It was whilst in neutral and in 1st & 2nd gear. That was yesterday though......this morning, guess what? Not a sound.....Not too sure what that was all about but it appears to have sorted itself. I'll keep an eye (or ear) on it and see what develops. Thank you for your point.

Regards,
Mac.

As per flatdog, don't run them in gear when on the stand, they don't like that at all :thumb
