If I am throtling off, ie aproaching a roundabout and changing down the box on the overun, there is a noise like when you back pedal a bicycle, or the sound of a ratchet in a socket set winding backwards, it's not loud, you can only just hear it. but the standard silencer is so quiet you hear every noise,
maybe they all sound like this. any coments would be appreciated.
EP 140 gear oil or straight through pipes maybe.

What year is your 850R ? -

There are two different models of 850, one with a five speed box and the other a six speed.

5 speed box has the usual well documented 5 speed box problems, and the six speed is usually OK.

Looks like you have the undocumented failure of the six speed box as opposed to the well documented failure of the five speed box.
Check it is the gearbox making the noise, it could be the well documented FD bearing, what is the mileage covered, although that may have no bearing, sic.
