Any reason why a 2004 R850R gearbox would not fit onto a 1999 R1150GS?

Any reason why it would not be an appropriate fitment?

Cheers :)

resale value?

given the choice of two 1150s one with a second hand OE box and one from a different model. I know which one I would choose.

Screw resale value - I don't tend to ever sell my bikes :)

Plus the difference between £650+ for a recon OE box and £320 for a 3,300 mile R850R box is too tempting :)

Thanks for the thought though!

R850R gearbox could be swapable with an R1100GS, although the impact of the different ratios would need to be worked out. I don't believe it will fit an 1150GS as 1150 & 1100GS gearboxes aren't interchangeable. They have different casings...

weren't there two different version... one that ended production in 2001 based on the 1100s and then the later one based on the 1150s??

The gearbox is from a 2004 model (i could be completely wrong of course)

Well, I shall have to hope that you are correct! I wonder what the new gear ratios will be like.

The difference would be cable or hydraulic clutch
I've looked at the online fiche and it seems to be an 1100style gearbox? But then again it's Yankee microfiche where they actually had or have an R900RT ???

You will need close up shot of the mount points and see if it's a hydraulic clutch or not If it's cable you're bollixed right away

It being a 6 speed box strongly suggests hydraulic clutch and 1150 gearbox design

Looking at the gear ratios, I'm told it'll be a lot more revs in top. I wonder if just that cog could be swapped before install to give me back the current top gear cruising?

That sounds like a long way round for a shortcut !

What's wrong with the original box ?

If you are going to start stripping boxes why not re-build the original and save the purchase price of the new one ?

(I've probably missed a thread somewhere showing smashed gearbox casings :blast).

Just a thought.

Bob.

Dead 5th gear, poor 1st gear selection and generally 85k of wear.

Well that's a good question. Firstly my current gearbox has 84,800 miles on it and this new one has 3,300 so there's a big wear difference. Secondly my machine is a '99 model and the gearbox is better on later machines (based on what I've read and that I've ridden a 2000 GS with an awful gearbox and a 2004 GS with a very sweet gearbox).

I'm hoping that if I swap boxes, perhaps swapping out 6th, perhaps not, then I shan't have any further gearbox problems and will be solving what has always been the single greatest problem with my bike - the awful gearchange.

Hmm. Spoke to Steptoe (or someone else at http://gsshop.co.uk/) and it seems that while the work can be relatively easily done, I need to source the appropriate gear and intermediate, which I do not have.

Spoke to Motorworks, who went into a spin as they simply don't know which part is required (for a start the realoem microfiche shows two types of box for that year) and can't guarantee to supply the right bits. They were very unwilling to supply parts on the grounds that they might be wrong.

So I've bought a new clutch kit and when that turns up I'll be bunging the gearbox on as it is. I'll see how it feels. If I really can't bear to live with it, I'll Take Action.

Twas me. I was attempting to balance a cocktail sausage on a stick on my nose while speaking to you ( don't ask).

That's what i sort of hinted at about you supplying the parts, saves me having all the grief of trying to get the right parts if they're wrong :D

I've got a huge box of asorted gears and cogs, but i have to go through them all counting all the teeth, and then making sure it meshes and has the correct centre. And i don't enjoy doing that. :augie

Cool :)

Sorry, but I have to: did you succeed?

LOL

Unfortunately, no one I have found is sure of supplying the right parts and so I cannot go down that route.

Ah, I don't.

Er, well if you change your mind and find the time (& inclination;) ) to find the right parts then I'd still like the box done. I usually go from the South Coast to London every day on this bike and so the bits where I'm at <mumble> on the A3 would be made much easier if I had the lower revving 6th gear.

Gears

Just rry a different bevel box,I experimented and found one that suits me.
davwe (abba Fan )GS.

Assuming that the ratios quoted by Tony.Nottm don't have any typos then it looks like the figures given for the GS are the optional overdrive 6th gear.

That is all but useless at less than 60mph as it equates to around 20mph per thousand rpm and when you drop below 3,000 revs on a standard 1150 with that box you run out of torque and flexibility.

The 850 box will give you a much more useable 6th which is still notably higher than 5th. It will probably be smooth and good from 50mph upwards.

those ratios were for a 2004 R1150R - which is afaik the same as the 850 varient apart from engine internals.

Maybe I was completely wrong in that assumption - in which case i apologise.
