Can somebody advise please?

My 05' R850R when firing up from cold, starts (with the fast idle set a bit) but squeals sharply as the engine kicks into life. I had got the starter cleaned at the previous major service and post that it had become better. From the last couple of days, the squealing sound has come back. Does not seem to happen once the engine is warm and then restarted (without fast idle).

Is this a symptom of anything gone/going wrong?

Alternator Belt?

Sounds similar to the alternator belt being too slack and/or worn?
When the engine starts from cold the drain on the battery means the alternator is working hard and the strain on the slack belt makes what I would describe as a "chirping" sound.
Check your drive belt when you get a chance - it's under the black plastic cover on the frontof the engine - easy enough to adjust - or to replace, if it's in poor condition.

I had a R1150RT with very similar symptoms, only made the noise when starting from cold. Turned out to be the starter motor. Just replaced it with one from Motorworks and that solved the problem.
