The fork damping on my R90/6 seems to be getting softer and a bit prone to dive. Apart from oil changes / oil grade, is there anything else to look out for that wears and may need a service?

The ATE forks work really well if you sort them out. I prefer them to the later Brembo braked ones.

Theres three small piston rings that sit at the bottom of the damper mechanism, they are service items but as usual nobody ever bothers and than slags the forks off

When the rings wear the oil bypasses the damper mechanism giving a really crap ride. Apparently the thing to do is to machine the damper to take another three rings.

There are a few more seals and springs in there that really need to replaced as well. It's also a good opportunity to replace the bump stop rubbers that break up over time.

New ball bearings in the damper valves are also needed.

I found Belray 5 oil in rebuilt forks worked a treat. Don't be tempted to go for the aeroshell oil motobins sell. It causes lots of stiction in the forks.

The piston rings are part number 13 in the picture. The ball bearing is 19

No. But there are some fiddly bits. Those piston rings are difficult to put back in. The recommended way is to use feeler gauges to slide the rings over the threads in the fork. Easier to take the lot out and work on a bench.
