Because it's more GS than the 1300

Morning all

Considering getting a 1300GS (moving from the 1250). Couldn't help but notice the BMW rack(s) and tail seemed less than useful for adding soft luggage. Specifically want to keep using my Kriega Drypacks and want somewhere to leave the loops attached that won't move e.g. holes in a rack - but a rack that doesn't look like it'll break if the Drypack has something heavier than a change of clothes. Given I'm looking at ex-demo (price/VAT combo) and they all seem to come with the Topcase Carrier, so wondering if there's some sort of rack attachment, or whether I'd be better off fitting a replacement rack (with decent pillion handholds).

Talk to Kriega. They make a great OS-base system designed for use without racks. I use them on all of my bikes now.

The 1300GS is heavy enough without Bolting more steel onto it.

Big heavy aluminium boxes with the aerodynamics of a brick and the width of an aircraft carrier are a thing of the past.

Although I'll concede that I miss their bottomless capacity and ease of use.

But they also just allow you to carry way too much stuff.

The top case carrier is made of aluminum and obviously intended to support a certain weight

There are adapter plates available from Givi and I presume also from SW Motech, Shad etc.
I'd looked at a few and they seemed to have upward protrusions - but just looked again and seen the Touratech Luggage Plate which looks spot on (y)

Interested in this thread on the GSA as I want to keep the pannier rack and grab rail but replace the OEM top box carrier plate only with something I can lash my dry bag to a little better

I have had a few GSs, yes the alloy boxes are easy but it is true they weigh a ton, make filtering difficult, can be dangerous in an fall and encourage you to take crap you can get along without.

I'll post a link to my solution for the G/S. I wanted to keep it light as possible.

I have always mounted my Kregia US30 without a tail rack. I put a bit of clear vinyl on any paintwork it may touch and add some strapping loops in appropriate positions.
You can make your own easily.
Cut a short length of webbing, melt the ends with a lighter. Heat up an old cross head screwdriver and melt a hole through the folded strap.
Buy a longer bolt and a two penny washers, add a spacer if required.

Great idea, I will do that.

I went with Tourtech rails and top plate , think I still have it moved to a lone rider one now as I have their topbox
