Rad guard and warranty

out of interest how many radiators have actually been damaged with out having protection fitted? I cannot recall one incident on this site, but i stand to be corrected.

Forty two million.

If the temperature remains exactly the same with or without rad guards it can't be having much affect on the airflow can it?

Maybe you would like to think about just how that temperature is maintained. I think you will find that there is a fan to help do that and the system is designed to maintain a temperature within pre defined limits. If the airflow is restricted the fan will just come on more often. Putting anything in front of the radiator will restrict airflow to some extent. Obviously a well designed guard might not have much effect but do you really expect BMW to test every one to satisfy themselves that there is no problem? If I owned a LC bike I would probably fit a guard but I still think the stance adopted by BMW is understandable.

Bought my LC 2nd hand from a BMW dealer with a warranty, it came with radiator guards fitted presumably by the previous owner and no mention was made of them invalidating the warranty, if they were that worried I would have thought they would have removed them - so go figure!

My dealer fitted mine to my new bike a few weeks ago, so they obviously aren't worried. I've never heard of own with rad guards overheating, even in hot countries.

I regularly rode between 35c-40c last summer here and this is the coolest running bike I've ever owned. My S1000R is another story...

I would never run a bike without a radiator guard regardless.

+1 been told from a senior BMW tech that warranty claims related to radiator problems will be scrutinised if rad guards are fitted.
Since you've confirmed from CHQ as well, then its a fact so we might as well accept it. If some lucky purchaser's dealer turns a blind eye, that's another story, but the fact still is.

In terms of temp, I will be using the gauge to monitor. I guess it all depends on the design. I bought altrider ones and they don't look or feel like they'd restrict too much airflow, but having just been on a maintenance course for the GS and seeing what a ball ache it is to fix a radiator puncture whilst on a long trip, I'll be fitting them.

Will let you know if my temp goes up but if I had to guess, I don't think it will be significant - let's wait and see.

But how many rads have been saved by guards that we will never know about?

The stone bounces off and you ride on blissfully unaware.

It probably is a slim chance that you would suffer a stone through the rad but knowing my luck when it happened it would be in the middle of nowhere.

I realise that any bike can breakdown but any reasonable precaution that could tip the scales in my favour is surely worth considering?

It's down to personal choice, I don't think we are ever all going to agree on this and that's fine with me.

But how many rads have been saved by guards that we will never know about?

I have it on good authority (maybe even from the mothership, but my lips must be sealed as to source) that it's the same number as those that have avoided their oil being corrupted by faceless villains, through the precaution of fitting of a lockable oil filler cap. Impressive, hey?

With the pound of butter in the fridge, you'll be as safe as houses.

Will any brand do ? It's just that I'm changing insurance companies for mine and one of the questions relates to additional security. I could quote you (being an insurance bod) and maybe get a discount. Hey, I could get 2 pounds and get double discount.

All this talk of rad guards. How many of you go places where they are actually needed? Road riding - deffo no. Off road - nope. Struggling here. Cannot see why you need them. A lot of hot air !
