Radiator Guard

I have been thinking about fitting radiator guards but when I bought my GSA L/C my dealer advised me not to fit them as then can reduce air flow to the radiators and hence cause overheating.

Is this a known problem with guards? or is my dealer being overly cautious.

If I did fit them I thought about the Cymarc stainless ones (http://www.cymarcbikeparts.co.uk/r1...ors-pair-fits-both-2013--2014-bikes-109-p.asp )versions unless somebody suggests some others are better.

It is what bmw say and your dealer is following the party line. They said the same thing with fitting them to hex head oilcoolers.

I bought a sheet of this from Halfords. Cut to shape and hot glued into
position it did the rads for 2 GSA's.

This is the same BMW who say there is nothing wrong with the early heated hand grips. It's BOLLOCKS !

When I bought my 'previously loved' LC from my local BMW dealer it had a number of 'extras' already fitted by the previous owner including a set of radiator guards, the dealer obviously had no problem with them being fitted as the bike came with the full BMW warranty. If they were really worried about overheating I'm sure they would have removed them before sale. Anyway if they did cause overheating perhaps I could channel some of the heat to the crappy '13 heated grips!

It's BMW covering their arse if any over heating problems damage the engine. The service manager at my local dealership suggested that I didn't fit rad guards to my GSA LC because any issues may void the warranty. Needless to say I've fitted rad guards anyway and never had an issue with overheating. I used the Rhizoma ones from Nippy Norman... they look good and not overly expensive or intrusive in their looks....

I have recently purchased a used GS LC from a dealer with 2 year BMW warranty the bike came with Touratech rad guards if it was such an issue surely they would have removed them!

Sticking anything in front of the radiators WILL change the air-flow to some degree so BMW will always say don't do it because there are plenty of bikermates (read numpties) that will fit something totally inappropriate.

I have done over 40,000 road miles on two WCs and not needed them, but I am sure that someone will now come along and say that they holed their rad 20 yds from leaving the dealer with a brand new bike

Having fitted a pair of R&G radiator guards to my own bike I can confirm that (according to the on-board information centre) the engine is running at the same temperature as it was without them fitted so go figure

I wonder if anyone who has radiator guards fitted has ever suffered from a leaking radiator caused by a flying stone?

I did 22k on two 1200GSA and then got my 2016 after 400 miles it got a pretty big ding in the R/H rad when following a mate, that was evidence enough for me, you can get a holed rad anytime.
I fitted rad guards straight away and have now done 9k and it gets no hotter than previous.

The rads are well out of the way of normal road rubbish; so I have taken the decision not to fit any. There is a remote chance that something sharp and nasty will ping up, but as I am a road rider and not a tailgater I will take this risk. Thinking about it, I have never fitted any water rad covers and never had a problem even on sport bikes with the coolers in the direct rubbish flow. Umm tempting fate now......
