Hi folks. Off to Europe this summer with 3 other mates on the bikes.
Myself and one if the other guys have full Autocoms fitted with push to talk button etc plugged in to Mitex radios for bike to bike comms.
We have 2 other identical radios that our mates are going to borrow.
Can the other guys use Autocom headsets and Autocom PTT cables plugged in to the radios without actually installing an Autocom hub?
Also, can anyone recommend a cheap helmet PTT setup for the radios as an alternative to the Autocom set up in case the guys don't want to spend the dosh on the Autocom parts?

Cheers
Kev

Last summer I was faced with the same problem.

I bought a s/h Autocom Active Plus off Ebay, plus a headset plus an adapter lead for the radio - often available from Ebay also. The whole lot, including radio, goes into a bumbag. No need to wire into the bike.

HTH,

John

dont think so...hub is needed to make it all work properly. try ebay for autocom or starcom, you dont need the latest hi tech stuff, a basic hub will do it but make sure you buy one with all the accessories/leads included as the pre digital set ups are not compatible with the post digital ones!

ps
the cheap sets you see are sh*t you can thear on the move...stick to the two top names!

Bike communications

There is no need to buy all the autocom gear. You can buy headsets and PTT (push to talk) for most of the pmr radios on the market. The pmr radios do not need to be the same brand but it can help for set up.

Maplins along with other will provide the ptt and headsets for helmets.. One key issue is the noise cancelling for the mic. One of the advantages of "branded" gear. Speak to Wild Talk in York who specialise in pmr ( and commercial) radios. The guy there is a font of knowledge and really helpful. They have developed their own bike to bike system which I intend to go and take a look at but in the meantime they have provided some great solutions for me.

Not too costly either.

Thanks for the advice guys.
Big Ted, I will put them on to the guys in York.

Cheers

If the Mitex uses a Kenwood-style connector this is also an excellent half-price deal. The radio is used to power the Autocom noise cancelling microphone and there is a PTT switch.

Hope this helps,

John

I use the Kenwood radio's with Autocom.

These work a treat, Autocom do battery eliminators, these clip in place of the battery and there is no need to wire the radio's up, plug them in and off you go, the eliminators also link up the audio in / out so no other cables are required and you do not need to use up another autocom input.

It also ensures no interference if you do power the radio from the bike as the eliminators also do the job of noise suppression.

The quality is really good, and with the Autocom VOX I have no need to fit a push-to-talk button.

This is not the cheapest way to get a setup, but I managed to get two radio's for £100 and picked up two Autocoms from this very Forum for under £100.

I had to buy the eliminators new, but for the convenience they add was money well spent - and all this gear will hold good used re-sale values.

Hi Kev,

Yes, Autocom make a kit which does exactly that. Kit 21TK and it is £92, it comprises of an Autocom headset, PTT & interface with a Kenwood (Mitex) connector. Simplicity itself but performs as well as any Autocom kit.

It will not allow for any other function such as phone, GPS, Pillion etc, just bike to bike. We also always have them in stock. :augie
