rain suit, are two peices better

Hello,

I currently and have done for years used a one-piece rain suit. However, some times I cannot be bothered to stop and put it on, when it starts to rain heavily, due to it being cumbersome to put on.

So I was thinking of buying a two-piece one, as I can see the advantage of stopping and putting these on a lot quicker.

Has anybody a two-piece and do they rate them, ie: do they keep you just as dry, (apart from the crotch area as they always seem to get there after an hour in the rain).

I've had a two piece rain suit for years. The biggest issue is that the more holes you have in a suit the more likely itis to let in water

Ensure that the trousers come up unfashionably high (like up to your armpits) and that the jacket doesn't ride up at the front to allow water to run up your chest under wind pressure (mine has draw strings).

I find the two piece much easier to get on over leathers than a one piece but they are quite bulky when packed down and don't roll into a convenient bum bag.

I bought mine cheap in a German bike dealership about 15 years ago and they're still waterproof

I don't use biking waterproofs anymore.
I tried my North Face Gortex walking trousers and jacket in some very heavy rain and I was as dry as a bone even in the gusset department.
I also ditched my thermal liner and use a fleece instead.
When I get to where I'm going I have a fleece and waterproof jacket to wear.
Won't touch biking waterproofs any more.

Having used both I find 2 piece much better and more versatile. I used to wear a 1 piece some years ago and found I was wet inside if wearing for a while due to lack of breathability,(sweat to most of us) and it was awkward to get on and off

I prefer two piece, on those days with heavy showers and sunshine can leave the trousers on and just put jacket on if required

Regarding waterproof pants, check the ones with full length zippers down both legs. I found this model a lot easier to put on/off.

I use a one piece if t wifie n me are touring in warmish climate,s
its much easier to get suits on quickly if you help each other.
Temperate climate me hein gerick voyager textie suit has never let in a drop in the 6 years of heavy use.
When i is off jaunting meself to warm climates it,s a cheapie akito desert suit over which i put a 2 piece bering set of waterproofs (zips right down the side of the trousers ) these are a good peice of kit and have so far not let in a drop !!

Two piece for me

Worn over the top of my Goretex lined twat suit to stop all that rain soaking in which is ridiculous I know.

My jacket is a fifteen year old Hein Gericke which is still waterproof worn with my third pair of Hein Gericke waterproof overtrousers.

i have 10yo+ HeinGericke 1-piece that protects me in the harshest thunderstorms england can throw at me. secret is to make sure the velcro seal has no gaps etc which involves a bit of fiddling and reseating.
cost me £50 and as i said over 10 years old! (and its a lovely black n purple shell suit design...RETRO!)

and then a two piece for lighter showers, i have normal mountain warehouse trousers and a discounted musto off shore racing jacket which can also fit over my leathers. the musto was £100 and is lightweight and 100% waterproof, plus i can wear it as normal jacket when off the bike.
theres a few musto discount stores dotted round the country.

if you dont mind looking liking a road-going yachtsman that is...

You can get some very good ex police goretex outfits very cheap if you don't mind the dayglo.

Alternatively, british military surplus do goretex kit at very low prices if you dont mind olive green or camo.

Two piece for me

Very similar - I have a Belstaff nylon jacket which was part of a 2 piece suit bought in the 90s. Still works fine with my leather jacket. Some years this jacket doesn't get used if I'm lucky when out & about in leathers.

The original bottoms started leaking after about 5 years as they were used more often with a winter jacket. Replacements were Belstaff also which lasted 5 years too, then a pair of Held which were okay until a leg zip failed. Current pair are very good, Buffalo from ghostbikes with nice chunky zips.

So, for me, a 2 piece suit is easier to put on plus it is more flexible in use as the bottoms can be worn with a winter jacket over jeans or leather trousers. I've also used the plain black Belstaff jacket as an emergency anorak when walking to the pub from a B&B.

I now have what I consider an ideal combo.

A cheap and cheerful waterproof hi-viz overjacket + BMW Klimacomfort Goretex overtrousers which happen to have a particularly good leg length (read shorter than normal) for me.
