Rode to my local BM bike dealer today and had a try on of the above in red. Lots of pockets and vents, zip off arms the lot. cost 550 euros (£336) !! Anyone own one and can justify the outlay to me. I am looking for a new jacket but.............

That looks like a good price to me - I paid about that here in the UK having secured a good discount.

Are they worth it? Well. I guess the jury is still out.

+++++
- the most comfortable jacket I have ever owned.
- Prooved perfect for touring in heat in france this summer.
- Pockets and vents everywhere.
- good protection.

-------
- it is very expensive
- it got filthy very quickly
- managing the inner liner in or out according to weather forecasts is a bit of a pain.
-too hot to wear off the bike in high temperatures and quite bulky to stow away on the bike.

Am I pleased to have it - yes. Would I buy another one - not sure.

Kinda answers my question, I was in the South of France this yaer and suffered badly in my Held black jacket. The only vents I had were in th earm............useless. The jacket looks great and fits well, lots of dosh though.

RALLYE 2

The plastic which is round the collar has fallen apart on mine so much so that I have had to remove all of it as it was rubbing my neck really bad,Worth the money? NO WAY,I used mine for a trip to alps this year and it pissed down every day, anything thats in your pockets will get soaked unless you put it in a plastic bag.I also found that when it rains hard the water runs down your arms once it's gone though the outer jacket and into your gloves. It's a nice looking jacket, but thats about it really for me anyway.Your only paying for the badge IMHO,not to sure about protection either, when the inner liner is removed and you have all the vents open you might aswell have a T shirt on.I only got one cos it was secondhand and cheapish. If you still want one mine is for sale £185 plus I have the BMW water bottle that goes in the back immaculate apart from the collar, size 54 euro.Going back to leather.01255 508176 Andy

Thanks for ther honesty Andy you have appeared to put me off!

Hi,
I bought a Rallye 2 suit with liners for Euro1,000 in Dublin. Crazy money but got a result. Toured in Spain / France, via darkest Wales / England all in the same gear. OK, passport got a bit wet so that lesson is now learned. Great gear, esp in sweaty ship's hold awaiting unloading, sweaty queue waiting for passport check, etc. So, early days, but I am happy and I would buy one again. Comfortable, flexible and dry inside the liners.
Have yet to find a way to keep rain out of gloves - bastard.
Will buy the GS gloves for next year.

Jacket

If you want to spend that sort of money, spend a little more and get the Rukka air power 3 jacket awesome bit of kit with all the vents etc and you know it's gonna be waterproof it's Rukka. There was a guy in Germany doing them for £399 I think on E-BAY.Thats the only textile jacket I would ever want.Andy

Yeah I've been thinking about the Rallye 2 suit, currently have Streetguaurd and Altantis 3, difficult acts to follow!

I was there with Andy in the Alps and the weather was atrocious..........however my Rukka gear kept me completely dry (and it's 6 years old and done 100,000 miles).........top kit and as good as new.
However Andy's comments whilst on the trip.............made me realise the shortcomings of the Rallye 2 gear

I'm happy with my rallye II, I have only two complaints, price, and that is that its no use in anything other than showers. If its going to be p^ssing down I put my 1 piece oversuit over the top, as when the outer layer gets wet, its gets heavy and you get cold even tho the goretex keeps the wet out

One piece over the top!

Doesn't that defeat the whole object of a versatile suit?

Surely then the Rallye 2 suit is not up to the job!

I have a Savannah suit and it is essentially the same as Rallye in that it has a zip in goretex lining but otherwise is not waterproof.

I have to agree wih Andy M. it can be a royal PITA as you are never sure whether to fit the lining and you need to put all items in pockets into plastic bags if rain is likely. Even the waterproof velcro bag they give you with the suit err - isn't!

Also agree that you have to give too much thought to what goes inside, over, outside what when dressing as rain eventually gets through the outer onto the goretex and runs down inside gloves, boots etc.

Plus points are it is fine in the summer. lightweight without the lining and plenty of vents; and has loads of pockets.

Would I buy another - probably not. There are better suits out there for the money.

I seem to have arrived at 'summer' and 'winter' outfits:

got the Savanna 2 trousers then jacket (without lining) off Sale racks, and they are great for summer (mental note made: 20 degrees plus - otherwise it's not warm enough!). When we were in the Picos the Savanna stuff was 'the nearest thing to riding naked' - fantastically cool. No sweating or dehydration problems. Yes, the downside is it not being waterproof, but then you have an oversuit for that purpose.

My Winter gear is the Hein Gericke All Seasons jacket (with liner), and Rukka Armortec trousers. Rukka gear is brilliant, and one day I will get a Rukka jacket.

I got rid of various Spidi / Frank Thomas / leathers to pay for the Rukka trousers and do not regret it at all - lots more hanging space in the Utility room now.

Cheers,

Neil.

And I am still not sure. I dont have an issue with donning a one piece at all. I liked the look of the Rallye 2 and after a very hot week in the Alps/Southern Europe earlier in the year I wanted something with vents in. I have a Held waterproof, armoured jacket I bought 3 years ago. Feels solid and is reasonable in the rain but terrible if its warm. The velcro is starting not to act like velcro as well. I know get a summer and a winter rig, I thought that by getting a Rallye, I might (doubtful) look the part but more importantly, I would have an all season outfit. Does not seem the case though.

Belstaff..

I use a Belstaff explorer jacket.. not been wet yet in 3 years of north wales finest.

I have a set of belstaff leather jeans, and a set of gortex trousers. The gortex trousers do let some moisture through around the knee armour, but it takes a bit of time. Some nickwax or equivalent waterproofer will probably solve this.

I like the Rallye 2 looks, but practicality, wise i will stick with the explorer. I have even had the sleaves repaired by belstaff, and the repairs are even waterproof.

Alot cheaper than the rallye kit, also fits me better. :D

OK here's another one :)

I like my Rallye 2 suit for summer. At > 30°C it is great. Vents open, Camelbak bladder in the back pocket, lovely!

The Gore liner is not so useful when it's hot. Too hot with the liner in, and if you leave it out and you get caught in a thunderstorm with heavy rain, you'll be soaking wet before you have it zipped in.

At lower temperatures you can leave the liner in and it IS waterproof. The pockets are not because they are in the outer jacket. And you have to get your gloves under the liner, which is not easy to do. So for spring / autumn leaving the liner in is fine.

For heavy rain I prefer my waterproofs over it. Like that the outer layer of the suit stays dry and so it is much warmer.

It is not a 4 season suit for sure. In winter I prefer my Dainese winter gear. If you buy the Rallye 2 big enough to wear enough layers under it in winter, it will be too loose in summer.

It does look dirty quickly. I have mine since this spring (about 20k km) and just washed it for the second time. But you can zip the liners out an chuck it in the washing machine. No biggie. The light colours do make it better for hot weather.

There is no magic suit that's perfect for summer and winter, sun and rain, desert and snow.

Would I buy it again? Yes.

Cheers,
Michel

I never realised that when I got rid of my VFR 6 months ago that buying a jacket would be such an issue! When I had that bike, I never gave it a second thought. It realy isnt a vanity thing, or the have BM, must wear the kit. I tried it on and it felt good, but there you are. Sounds like Rukka make decent kit, I,m lucky over here, cos I am in the Army I get all my clobber tax free. Suppose it makes up for being away 6 out of every 18 months! I think I shall have a look in Hein Gericke again, they have some good kit in there and their prices are ok.

I have a rally 2 jacket, and a street guard, just been round europe with a couple of friends, and i decided to take the rally 2 as we were expecting some warm weather, turned out to be a good choice the weather was baking hot for the first 8 days, and with all those vents and zips to undo and let the breez in the jacket for me is superb.........

However it was obviouse the weather would not last, never does for me!!!!! and it didnt, then came the day we were leaving austria for Weilheim Germany..... it started to spit with rain as the sky got blacker, so we pulled over to put our all in one suits on,what we bought before the trip, we no sooner got them zipped up and the heavens opened it absolutely pissed it down all the way to weilheim...... the guy that we went with was wearing a textile Rukka with a removable gortex lining, very similar jacket to the Rally 2 ( HE GOT PISSED WET THROUGH )

The point im trying to make is if you want to stay dry as well as warm get yourself an all in one suit it was the best £60 quid i have ever spent, you can buy all your fancy expensive bmw and rukka suits like i have done..... but the best cost me £60 quid from bmw.
