I've decided to wash my rallye 2 suit......... no problemo... follow instructions etc etc.......... thing is it leaks like a sieve without the goretex liner.... has anyone used one of those nikwax type things and are they any good?

I washed mine with the Nikwax detergent and then waterproofed (I thought!) with Nikwax.
The only difference I've found is that it gets dirty a lot quicker, in fact it's like a dirt magnet!, but it is no way water repellant.
Won't do that again!!

I thought it was just the inner Goretex liner that was waterproof from the start? Its oneof the less nice things about this kit. But worth it for the multiple vents when its hot. Bring it on! NOrman:D

S'funny, I've just hung mine up to dry after washing it!

It's the third time I've washed it and although I've used Nikwax water-proofing spray on a cordura type Frank Thomas jacket, I'm loathe to do so on the Rallye II. I've seen one in my dealer that turned pink after it was re-proofed by the owner! I don't know what was used on it but it turned very pink!

At that time the suit was subject of some back and forth over whether the owner hadn't taken the proper care to warrant a claim. (I don't know what the result eventually was but it's been enough to stop me using the Nikwax on it).

I'm toying with selling mine so if you do take the plunge and try the Nikwax, I'd be interested to know the result.

BTW I've used the Nikwax on a lightweight over-suit and the FT jacket without problem. I've always sprayed the stuff on when the garment is wet as per the destructions.

It is the gore tex liner that's waterproof, not the shell.

I just wanted to see if I could make the shell slightly water repellant but Nikwax failed miserably.

The shell soaks up water which then has an ablative effect, taking body heat with it as it evaporates.

The rallye 2 jacket and trousers are for summer use really, and thats why I bought them, but I thought I'd try to make them perform better.

I nikwax mine everytime - both the techwash and the tx-waterproofing after.

I have to say it does the job. I only use the gore-tex lining if it's very cold or I know it'll be really wet. It does seems to look wet very quickly but very little if any gets through even without the liner.

It's a light colour so it's bound to get dirty quick - it always comes up a treat after washing.

As for summer use only - rubbish - i have used mine through two winters with the addition of a heated waistcoat. with the three layers that makes it a great all-year jacket. It's big enough to wear extra layers under when cold and is nice and airy with the zips in summer - and because it's not balck it doesn't get too hot too quickly.

Nikwax - works for me.

I wash it in the Techwash and re-proof iot every other wash. Do the same with my HG Master trousers.

BMW sell a kit of detergent and spray for cleaning these garments. At a time when I had a few quid, I parted with the asking price and brought the stuff home to give my Savannah a birthday wash.

What a waste of fecking money! It came up clean OK, but the spray does nothing that I could see.

I now give the suit an occassional wash using soap flakes. It's just as good and about £15 cheaper!

It is but I just thought I could be clever and make the shell showerproof...... by using one of the 'technical washing products'

Can't help wondering if by making the outer shell waterproof, you might cause yourself problems with the effects of the goretex liner where water is supposed to come outwards only and then be wicked away by the outer layer.

You may well be waterproof from the outside, but will you end up sitting in a sticky sweaty suit???

Have you met Betty Swallocks by the way ? :D

I spent some time with Travel Dri-Plus last weekend and had a massive long list of questions for poor Les who patiently sorted me out. This exact topic was one that was covered...

The secret would seem to be to use the Techwash and waterproof combination but you must thoroughly wash any detergent residue out of your washing machine tray as detergent will kill the process.

This will make the jacket highly water repellant but at very high speed or in very heavy downpours it will eventually penetrate the jacket - but then your Gore Tex liner will take over.

I haven't actually tried it yet but I saw Les splash water liberally on his old BMW jacket and watched the water bead and roll away so I'm sure that if done properly it will work.

Stupidly I didn't buy any from him as I was distracted by tents and materasses and solar torches and waterproof bags and - well, I spent a small fortune so will have to catch up with them at the BMF show.
