Thanks Mouse.

Did that RAM code include the arm or plate?

Did you opt to position the clamp off the left shoulder of that bar to accommodate the length of the arm? Is there any other reason not to clamp further round (clockwise) on the horizontal part?

Eddy. the kit (RAM-B-149Z-G1) that Mouse mentioned is complete, ie you get U-Bolt, arm and round plate + screw pack to attach onto the Garmin SPIII cradle (when removed from the Beanbag).

Mouse, please send some pics for the RAM UK web site when you've prised it out of the garage.

That tube is more cylindrical than I envisaged from the earlier image - a deceptive angle, I guess.

Cheers !

It includes everything in that picture - the U clamp, the arm and the plate. £26.94 inc postage from GPS Warehouse.

In fact I did end up mounting the clamp on the horizontal part of the bar. The reason being, I hadn't realised that the mounting plate attaches to the back of the GPS unit rather than the underside. So the plate needs t be a bit higher up than in my photo above.

I'll post a pic of the finished set up tomorrow.

I need to tidy up the wiring but the mount is just groovy! :D

Just how I imagined it - Nice one!

Do you think a shorter arm might be useful.

Any chance of a shot from the side/s

No I think the arm is pretty much the right length. That shot isn't taken from the rider's viewpoint - when sat on the bike the GPS is actually obscuring the top 10mm of the rev counter dial. Of course this will depend on how tall you are etc.

Looks good

Couple more questions... (you'll be glad when I take delivery of my own bike to tinker with!)

How far from the screen is the back of your GPS or mount?
How fiddly is tightening the clamp?
Would it be possible (or pointless) to put the clamp here?

Mouse, Whatton & Eddy

Jon came over for some bits. We attached the Quest to his Migsel bracket as others have shown in the forum.

Also, Jon wanted to attach the U-bolt backet onto the rail, so the Quest was above the fluid reservoir, so with two parts; RAM-B-201 standard arm plus RAM-B-230 double adaptor we achieved this flexible mount option. Jon told me this is what he was trying to describe to whatton. So with digital camera handy we zapped these results.

The full results are on www.ram-mount-uk.com , look in customer galleries , bike mount revews and its Quest 5 review.
Cheers,

I understand wanting the buttons to hand, but won't the aerial take a hefty blast of wind there?

The Quest looks quite a lot smaller and lighter than the Streetpilot 3. I personally don't fancy nearly a kilo of GPS and mounting sitting on one side of my handlebars :) Although that position is probably good for using the button when on the move, on the downside you will have to shift your attention further from the road to read the GPS screen.

Eddy - With the screen in the 2nd notch from the top, the GPS antenna is almost touching the screen. If the GPS would work ok with the antenna horizontal (not sure about this) then I could move the mount a bit higher still so as not to obscure the top of the clocks.

Fitting the clamp is relatively easy, no real problems there.

Hi mouse,

I used to have a "V" mounted there and it's actually at the same eye level as your speedo/rev counter, so not that diverting from the road I found.

Hi Peeps...

Ive put mine there... and it all looks/works OK... There is a slight restriction on lowering screen beyond half way mark... but mine has always been "upright" anyway !:)

I was contemplating putting the u-bolt there, currently mine is setup like this

gsipaq1.jpg

However i'm contemplating getting the powered ipaq holder.

Does Mr Ram Man have any comments on this product and are there discounts for ukgser members?

The cradle shown is a RAM-HOL-CO1 though I prefer and often will suggest using the later version, RAM-HOL-CO2, as its easier to remove the iPaq from the cradle and the spring loaded arm is shaped differently. I am aware of the occasional user he get out a file or the dremmel to modify the upper retaining arm on the RAM-HOL-CO1.

There are several bike iPAQ mount reviews on the RAM UK site, but not using RAM-HOL-CO2P . In the main, they've use either the CO1 or CO2 cradle plus the iPAQ's own power lead wired in.

Finally putting plans into action...

Now I have the large part of the mount (the bike!), I've been able to tinker myslef and I came up with this. Similar to Stig and Mouse, but using the hole I point out earlier in the thread, and rotate the ball to face the rider.
