Ratchet spanners.........

they look like a great idea, but rarely actually fit anything IME because they are so bulky. might be useful to have i suppose, but i don't have any.

i've got a few of these "ratcheting" open end spanners from facom which i use very occasionally.

i bought the "Halfords Pro" set (8 - 19mm) at about £40.
very well made, polished finish, lifetime gt. and very nice to use, good fit and a lovely smooth ratchet action

not cheap sh1te:thumb2

how much

I've got a couple of these Halfords Pro ones too (10 & 12 mm).

Very useful on the smaller nuts & bolts that are fiddly to finger tighten and nothing like the bulky ones that have pressed steel frames.

These are no more bulky than a standard spanner.

Things have moved on a bit since the old bulky ratchet spanners. Latest ones are the same size as ordinary combination spanners. Im with MikeP Halfords Pro are great I use my set 99% of the time when a socket wont do

i've never seen any as slim as my combination spanners which just fit many recessed bolts & nuts. check out the ring end on the facom pictured against the ones in MikeP's pic.

i tend to use a 1/4 drive ratchet most of the time. i suppose i'm really saying that IME of working with other people who have them (professionally), they seem to stay in the bottom of their toolboxes. this might explain why they always seem to be cheap or "on offer". even with snap~on.

I too have got a set from Halfrauds..

I got the ones with the Flexi Head, Top quality tools in my opinion.

Lovely finish and feel as good as Snap On.

I have got Snap on tools also but The Halfrauds Pro range are just what every DIY mechanic needs is their toolbox. I know people who have broken a socket and they have changed it FOC..

I use them daily... i have a halfords pro set find the pretty good built the are slightly wider than well made good standard ring ones.
the gap between the ratchet clicks are good but could be better I also have one by Bergen... it's really well made and better than the Halfords ones IMO.

Also as far as i'm aware Halfords don't cover the ratchets under their lifetime guarantee... i had a 10mm ratchet ring go on me... as much my fault as the rings i didn't oil it.. and nothing i used it for normally has any oil on or near it so it must have got a little water inside it rusting the internals and it started to slip and skip.... i went back to Halfords with it and they did change it but said the ratchets weren't covered in the guarantee.

They can be really handy for the likes of putting racks and top box mounts on the back of the GS.. places where it is hard enough to get in with a proper spanner... a ratchet means you only have to fit it on the nut or bolt once and ratchet away... unless you're like me and put it on the wrong way round:blast

If you get a halfords trade card you get another 10% at least off Pro tools and masses more of spark plugs filters etc. they were doing oil filters for the likes of a Ford focus for £1.90 and brake pads for a corsa for £7.10

Set of Halfords ones here too.......lovely they are too.

They had a third off the last time I was in there :thumb

EDIT...For 12 quid, you haven't got much to lose from getting the Aldi ones though......it's worth a go :)

How do we get one of those then??

You can go in and ask , you can get one if you're in a trade that uses halfords stuff or the managers discretion ... the manager offered me one while i was in the other day... so i said OK... good move on his part... i went and bought one of the Vortex socket sets then... cos i got a tenner off worked out at 20%:)

are they any good?

I see some are available from Aldi from Thursday, anyone had any experience of these?

Forgotten how to do linky thing, so you'll have to settle for the long version!!

I bought a set yesterday. I've not used them in anger yet but they seem excellent quality chrome steel. However, I suspect that the ratchet is a little coarser than the top flight tools.

Whatever, top VFM!
