Over the last week or so my bike has a developed a new noise. After reving the engine to 5k or above I notice that when the engine calmes down there is a rattling (not engine noise - a bit like something shaking) for about 3 seconds which dies away as the engine goes back to idle.

Any ideas? Is it dangerous?

Engine crashbars cracked at the mounting point ?

Cam chain tensioner not - er tensioning.

loose bits in the panniers you'd forgotten about.

foam missing from toolbox tray

Andrew -

Is the noise similar to the noise you hear the first few seconds after engine start? If so, then it may be the common cam chain noise problem.

BMW have a new cam chain damper for the left side, p/n 11 31 2 325 563. 204.00 USD for the three-piece assembly.

This new damper is not the original design. It silences the noise the chain makes when slapping on the stationary chain guide.

Having had the usual quiet rattle a few moments after startup, I had the dealer fit the new cam chain tensioners under warranty. The original rattle might be marginally improved, but probably not worth the effort cos its still there. However, since the "repair", I now have a much louder and intermittent rattling when hot often after a 5000rpm burst. Lasts a minute or so and sounds diesel like. Anyone got any ideas?

Are you sure that your dealer installed the enhanced tensioner? Any chance he may have installed a new one of the standard design? I have not heard yet of a dealer in the US or in Europe who is aware of the enhanced left cam tensioner.
