My R1150GS is 99T with 45k on the clock
Not previously regularly serviced - or no evidence of such

There is a fair bit of rattle from the are of the alternator drive belt when I start from cold.
The Haynes Manual suggests there will be some, but I would appreciate advice to know if this is something I should check on.

ditto

it must those blue and white ones, mine does it to. The front cover is easily removed if you wish to you could check the belt is correctly tensioned and the pulley is tight. Personally I wouldn't be too worried unless it's really bad.

'V' poly belt should have been replaced at 36000 mls

I'd have a look if it were me

It may be the nearside cam chain tensioner rattling until its oil pressure builds up.
Common problem on early bikes-try a search.20/50 oil also helps.

Yes. change it then keep in mind a 'one off check' at 6,000 miles. not sure how essential that is - but its mentioned in the haynes manual.

That sounds like what my GS's been doing for ages.

More of a 'twittering' than a rattle, but goes as the bike warms up - usually by the time I reach the end of the street.

So this is normal then?

Noise

How does an alternator belt make a noise? apart from squealing.?
