Help I need advice, took delivery of my BMW approved bike on Tuesday. It has to go back to BMW tomorrow (Friday)as rear shock is knackered, also there is a distinct tapping noise only for a couple of seconds from off side of the engine only. Once oil pressure has built up it goes away, is this normal?
Bike was advertised as FSH but according to service book had first service at 700 miles in 2014 and no record until service until I purchased it. Should I be worried about this bike it has covered 6500 miles. I am new to this forum & a returning biker after a few years off, any advice welcome

Don't worry. 5000 between service and they all make the tapping noise on start up. Believe me ride any and they all do it. Relax and enjoy it, oh get some ear plugs too

At that mileage/age I would have thought an annual service or two would have been done and recorded in the book.

It has a service, when decided by bike useage. However, if it isn't requiring a service, due to mileage covered, an annual service should be done instead. Oil/filters and, if needed, gearbox/final drive alternating years.

Just check the warranty docs you received with the bike, some are not entitled to the full new 2 year warranty period.. could get caught out.!
Tapping, my new Rallye just the same on start up..

Mine does too tap, I wondered if it is because you start it on the side stand and the oil takes longer to get to one side of the engine??????

I thought the Approved Used status, which now comes with a 2 year warranty, was only able to be applied to bikes which had been fully serviced iaw the BMW schedule. Did yours (like mine) come with the 2 year warranty? Your service book may not fully reflect what work has been carried out, particularly if another dealership did some work and the previous owner didn't present the book. A BMW car dealer has full computer records of the work they've done, but can only see 'visits' to other dealers, so I expect it would be similar for motorrad dealers. Sounds like a chat with your dealer is in order.

The tapping is the hydraulic valve decompressor, it lifts the valve to lower the compression so the small starter and battery can turn over the engine..:augie

Your full of shit, :D

we all know its the auto release valve of the crank case corrosion inhibiter opening ! ;)

Thanks for the comments my mind is at ease now, started it this morning on centre stand as it was picked up to go back to dealer have shock replaced and it did not make the tapping sound. I can put it down to me being over cautious

Did you check your blinker fluid reservoir?

If thats empty or low, it could account for the noise
