Hi, Ive just had my new bike arrive tonight,
Its a 2004 9k mile fsh gs1200.
Bike starts and ticks over fine, but in neutral with teh clutch out, theres a bit of a rattle / rumble.
Clutch in and it disappears.

Any ideas what teh likely cause is, ie is this common?

Cheers PB

Strangely my 05 bike with similar mileage has started rattling on startup. Goes away after 30 secs, but disconcerting none the less.

So in short they all do that sir. You would have thought something as basic as this would have been sorted years ago. I know an air cooled dinosaur ain't ever going to be mechanically silent, but this appears a relatively simple solution to a long standing issue. It doesn't project an ideal image for BMW every time we rattle into life, not mention to our embarassment & foot shuffling until it goes away, no solace in the fact it only lasts for 30secs, this seems like a lifetime in a car park surrounded by rice burning pilots with smirks on their collective faces.

but his bike is a 1200 and they don't all do that AFAIK. maybe early ones had the old style, noisy 1150 tensioner, but i don't think so :nenau

anyway, why would it go away if you pull in the clutch? sounds like it's the clutch/transmission rattling to me.

IMHO the rattle with clutch out is, as Cookie says, quite normal and is, I think, the thrust bearing unloaded. As soon as you load it (pull the clutch in) it goeas silent - they all do that sir, it's not a problem :thumb2

Noisey cam chain tensioner at start up.
Mine will do that if the bike has been standing for a while (over a week or so), soon goes away once oil pressure is built back up and don't see it being an issue.

Thanks for the replies.
The bike looks lovely and Im intending to take it out for work today and give it a go. It's done only a few hundred miles in the past few months and the chap I bought it from actually raised teh rattle with the dealership prior to teh warranty running out and they didnt seem worried about it. Ive just not heard it on a 1200 before.
Cheers
