Bolsover, no longer the home of the Beast.
Last week, in the pouring rain, I rode my ST a few miles away from home, and then returned, piss wet through, a few hours later. For the outbound journey, my earplugs were well and truly in. That little trip had me thinking just how smoothly the bike was running, how refined (relatively.....) it felt, and how the only sound I could hear was the deep tone of the baffle-free Remus. :clap

On the return run, the plugs had gone awol, the only pair I had with me. O....M....G!!.....the bike sounded like a complete bag of shite. Rattling, crashing, clunking - it was embarrassing, if there'd have been any pedestrians about, they'd have been turning round to see where the racket was coming from.

What was making the bloody row?! :nenau Everything's fastened up nice and tight, its not the screen (a well-known source of rattles on the ST), I can't find anything loose, anywhere. Does it just sound like that because I'm sitting astride it? Could worn suspension cause it - originals are on 30k miles now, Shock Factory ones going on over the winter?

Anyway, pack of earplugs now put under the seat - at least I'll not hear the racket next time out! :)

Hmm going to have to pin the noise down to an area somehow, does it alter with speed or turning?

Its only noticeable at lower speeds over rough road surfacing, which makes me think it could be suspension related. Mind you, at speed without plugs, the wind noise drowns everything else out! It'll be interesting to see if new units sort it.

In the words of a Motorrad agent.........

"They all do that Sir"

Buy more earplugs.

….. there have been a few instances reported, where the bobbins 'disappear' shortly after being fitted.
;)

Oh ok…...Did you check to see if the disc is rattling tho:hide:D

I only checked them last week :P - a tiny bit of movement 'in/out', none at all around the axle, if that makes sense, so I'm sure its not from the discs. There's a fender extender thing fitted - when I fitted one on my K1200R-Sport, that rattled like a bastard, so much that I had to bin it. It doesn't seem to be able to touch anything on the ST, at least not when the bike's stationary (same on the R!), so I might whip that off tomorrow, just to make sure.

Rattling brake pads in the caliper castings ??

I get a clunk from the front my 2008 GSA if I brake hard, traced to some backlash in the pads.

The rear brake pads also clatter in the caliper.

Put some copper grease on the back of the pads see if it helps also maybe a missing or weak spring clip on the pads.
