Not really- To answer the original posters question. He has play in the discs that shouldn't be there. Forget confusing him with what miniscule amounts of play should or shouldn't be there.
His is a completely different question to a different problem.. And a problem which i (and you) see on a regular basis.
And i'll say it again to the original posters question of HIS problem - He shouldn't have any play
The play that has gone off on a tangent isn't floating play...... it's for heat expansion/isolation.........

I have known disks to rattle after people have fitted stainless shouldered bolts, it was found that the shouldered length was too long and the wavy washer was not keeping the disc under tension thus causing the rattle. If you remove one of the bolts you will be able to see if the disc has elongated the fixing hole, check to see if there is wear on the bolt shaft too. elongation does not normally cause rattling if the wavy spring is correct and in good condition but of course should be addressed.
Check by pressing and pulling the disc with your fingers, it should have a movement of 30thou at the bolt, somewhat more at the edge of the disc but it should be under spring tension form the wavy washer. If it is floppy then it will rattle and you will need to inspect the washers to make sure they have not lost their spring tension. It may be that previous owner or mechanic has put the wrong washers in. As mentioned by others it may be the wheel mountinf lugs are worn but though I do not doubt this can happen I have never seen it.

It is more confusing to tell him they "should have no movement anywhere." and that if they do have this 30 thou movement they are "fecked".

Worn Mounting Lugs
Please accept my apologies as the piccies are not the best, but you can see that the mounting lug has 'morphed'.
Over time the hub ali gets squeezed into the mounting hole on the disc thus creating a bigger gap that the wavy washer cannot deal with and so the disc rattles.
You can then see the shape of this squeezed mass until it is finally bought down flat.
As stated above, this cures the problem short time, but the dics soon warp. I would not recommend this as a form of repair.

Dazlove, Thanks for the pictures, as I said I never doubted this could happen, now Ive seen it, well pictures anyway. Had these bikes covered large mileages? Any repair to this form of problem would have to be machined to ensure accuracy, suppose it would be better than the cost of a new wheel, even then you could not take off too much as the float in the disc would not be in the correct position.

this happened on my R1100S, and now on the 1150GSA (worse) due to a lot of very rough road riding. I've filed the wheel stems (relatively!) level and put wavy washers on both sides of the disk. Been like that for the last 6 months. Works fine
The original poster said his discs rattled, not that they had 30 thou of play......

Ok, parts fitted, and great no movement.
500 miles later and it's back!!!!!
All torqued up, but it has the movement back! Do I need washers rather than wavy washers, has the disc mounting holes elonggate, or (gulp)has the wheel hub dome wear??
The corresponding caliper seems to have a sticky piston, so I'll fix that, but help!!!!

Mine did that, replaced the washers 3 times and they kept breaking, the problem turned out to be a seized caliper in my case, only half of it was working and putting too much pressure one side of the disc. Unseized it and no more problems, and, the brakes work better too !
