My new 1100gs has had new pads and discs all round and new bobbins and spring washers on the front discs.

The rear disc is really loose and I can rattle it by hand.

Should it have the spring washers on?

Tom

I am 99% sure my 1100 has no spring washers on the rear disc bolts. It is rigidly fixed to the wheel.

Thanks for that link thats a handy site.

The bolts are m8x15.5 so the right length. I think there is a small lip worn on the posts on the wheel so they are not tightening up properly.

I presume there are no different brake disc thicknesses?

Out with the file then.....

Tom,

That bike used to have cast iron discs on it, definately on the front anyway.

I know there were problems when it had rained and the pads bound to the discs.

Were they recent?

This disks and pads on it look near new. They are binding a bit at the moment - the rear caliper was siezed at the slide so ive managed to free that off.

The fronts appear a bit stiff but I hope once I ride it they will free off.

The discs on it now are virtually new but it hasn't been used for a while as you no doubt know.

The cast iron ones were not on for that long and didn't wear out, he just changed them because they stuck to the pads and caused ridges.

The bike has been well looked after mechanically, Steptoe and Brian Giles have worked on it over the years and Richard is a very handy mechanic himself believe me.

It was used all year round and did suffer from road salt.

Yep - thats my assessment too. It started first touch of the starter yesterday - not bad after being laid up for two years.....

The salt has attacked it a lot - still it will keep me out of mischief this winter.....

Ive ordered new disc bolts and some spacer washers as in the useful info sticky. If that doesnt work I might order a new rear disc just to make sure its the right one. Do the simple stuff first.....

Not sure what to do with the wheels as they are in a state. I dont think I can stretch to a full rebuild. Might get them blasted and then paint them.

I agree about the wheels, can they be powder coated?

I'm really interested in this because I got Richard into getting a GS and even took him pillion on mine to the dealer to pick it up.

Not sure. I would worry that the finish would break up with the flexing of the spokes which is why im thinking of paint.

Ive washed the rear wheel tonight with some autoglym alloy wheel cleaner and its come up a but better.

Going to try some elbow grease, t-cut and a scotchbrite pad this week and see what happens....

Rear brake disc noq not rattling. New bolts and spacer washers as in the useful info sticky did the job.

Both front and rear brakes binding slightly - is this normal? Shiukd they touch th discs at all?

Tom

Stripped all of the calipers today as I wasnt happy with them and then had a fault on the abs.

Got the brakes bled again and still a fault. Tried a 3rd time and fault gone :-) brakes still binding a bit but im a lot happier the calipers are moving freely and its just the bike needs riding.

Freed off the gear pedal now moving through all the gears nicely. The clutch feels stiff - its got a new cable on it so sprayed the gearbox end with wurth high pressure grease.

All lights now working but need to strip the horn switch. Had all of the brake light switches to free off to but that's all done.

With a bit of luck this bike will have an mot this week :-)
