I have just bought an ex-demo 4800 mile triple black which I have done my first hundred miles on today . Loving the whole experience except having owned BMWs before i notice that this machine is far from smooth . Is this slight rattly feel ok for a GS? The bike still has a lot of warranty left in all other respects the power and handling are great.. I asked the dealer this afternoon they say this is normal. should the bike feel smooth ? this Machine feels rough to me , The guy I spoke to says he rode this one a lot and he will vouch for it! Your views would be appreciated

Harpic , mine is as smooth as a jap bike (last was a creamy FJR1300) I don't think your sounds right .
You are welcome to try mine .

Thanks for that Stuart ..I think I just need to know what is normal for a GS what age is yours?

It is a noisy engine the first time I heard my first one I thought there was something wrong I've had 3 now 13, 14, and 16 all the same

Cam Gears ?

A friend of mine was concerned at his 2015 GS LC being rattly, and his local dealership examined said bike, the hardened coating on the cam gears had broken down, the dealership had received repair kits in advance for such problems, even their own demo bike with 300 miles was also effected, worrying thing is all that crap is flowing round the engine ?

My 2014 GSA is an agricultural bag of shite.....I love it :D

Do you use ear plugs?

The WC models are rattly and noisy and seems to be made worse by reflected noise due to the bodywork design

ps they get rattlier as the miles get higher

I thought triple-blacks were renowned for being rattle?

Oh no - just realised ..... IT"S JUST A PAINT FINISH! :blast

Had 2 now rattle like a bag of spanners when hot / low revs / off load, love mine but about to soundproof with specialist material around the cockpit. Will report back if it improves the situation

That is exactly what i am experiencing I am reassured. Strange that this is normal and yet the GS is such a popular machine! I have done several miles today and am getting quite used to it. Acceleration and handling are tops !

Water jackets will reduce some engine noise, but that in itself may unmask some of the higher frequency noises of the valve train rattle compared to older air cooled models.

Are there any db levels published to compare old air heads vs LC engine noise levels?
