I'm just about to set to with a full service on my new bike. The general stuff I can manage. However, from reading on here I need to re-grease my shaft sooner than later. I've looked on the site, and haven't found a 'how to'. Anyone got any pointers?, is it covered in Haynes (if so I'll buy one). What parts do I need?.

Thanks

Rob

You don't need to re-grease your shaft .

I've never heard of the shaft splines wearing on a 1100/1150 GS

Steppers, i've heard one case the splines worn out some 100Ks.

I'd clean and re-grease the splines at every 50K miles or so just to be on the safe side.

Also the paralever bearings need to be cleaned and regreased, depending how much dirt roads you do, dirt penetrates 'em, i've learned it after i took it apart to inspect. If sticking on clean tar roads, then probably no need.

They both (shaft and and paralever bearings) are covered in the Haynes manual, it says what grease, tricks to do etc you need. Buy it, well worth the penny!

See how dirty mine were just after 30Kkms since new:

Take the shaft off and grease the gearbox output splines:

And the bevel box'es input shaft's splines, and you're done :thumb

Would be good to clean and regrease the bevel box-to-paralever tapper roller bearings too once you're there.

See mine had a gulp of transmission oil there too, but it's the "they all do that sir" case for lubricating the bevel box'es input shaft's bearings :D
