Hi

I recently posted about buying a new chain and sprocket for my F800GS
I have the chain but am still waiting on the sprocket.

In preparation i have removed the back wheel, original chain and original sprocket. Removing the spindle assembly was not as easy as it should have been (quite stiff !).

When i posted a few weeks ago i had some banter with a senior member about his disapproving comments towards my bike maintenance, unfortunately this thread has now disappeared, funny thing is i can remember that in amongst it was some advice on the issue of greasing the spindle.

Soooo no names.....i would like to invite to you to take the morale high ground once again and advise me as to what grease i should use if i want to take better care of my bike from now on ?

Anyone else can chip in, i,m all ears !

Thanks for taking the time to read my post

Hope you've removed the gearbox sprocket.............before removing your rear wheel/chain and sprocket:augie

Copper slip everything that is a metal to metal, I even copper slip my brake calliper bolts...............however you naysayers I also lock wire them in place so they can not slide loose.

Any maintenance is better than no maintenance.

Have fun

Why would you coppaslip something, then wirelock it? Don't you trust that BMW got it right?

As for the grease, I use generic bearing grease. There's no pressure or heat to withstand, it's really just to prevent corrosion build up and prevent the thing siezing in place.

Cheers Mark, i went with the copperslip in the end !

Have you tried the grease from the bucket found at all Motorad parts counters worldwide? You know, the one they use to insert the shaft which allows them to extract your wallet.

Why wire lock it once you have copper slipped it, now that is a good question?

The reason being that when you add copperslip something all torque values are null and void and as such it is better to safety wire something which is so crucial to you stopping your bike, the same reason as when you race you have to have your sump plugs wire locked up.

Hope that answers any questions and if anyone needs any wire locking done just pop in for a coffee and a chat.

Many thanks for reading

Mark
