Hi all

After cleaning my 07 1200 GS yesterday i noticed a lot of grease all over the back end of the drive shaft. it appears to be coming from the rectangle hole under the casing where it joins the rear wheel. It may be oil mixed with road crud that is now like grease or it may be grease. assuming this is not normal as the rear brake disc is covered and does work poorly. feeling this will be an MOT issue when it is due.

Any idease guys please?

yes i know i should have taken before and after pictures but thought about it this morning and will use this week and try to get some.

When you refer to the “driveshaft” I think you mean the ‘swingarm. The driveshaft is inside the swingarm. Any oil appearing in the area you describe is likely a gearbox output shaft seal or final drive input seal leaking.

Had the same on my ‘08 only recently and in my case was the FD input seal leaking as per Steptoe’s post. As I had 45k mikes on it I had the whole FD rebuilt by Mikeboy of this parish. To tell for sure I took the FD off, cleaned the swingarm tunnel and FD, reassembled and took it out for a short ride. Pretty obvious where it was coming from when reinspected.

Yes sorry guys it is underneath the rear end of the swingarm which holds the drive shaft. Steptoe is this a fairly easy job for local MC shop or a bit specialist? just that i want to book in somewhere and not waste someones time.

Thanks for the replies

Depends which seal is leaking, and if there are other reasons that’s caused the seal to leak.. your local MC would know better than me if they could do the job or not

Thanks for the heads up theoneandonly will keep you updated once we find the source

Quick update fellow owners, took the bike to an independent who has advised it is the seal between the hub and rear brake disc rear wheel bearing also cooked so we are replacing with a refurbed rear end.
