I know this has been posted before but I can't find it. Does anyone know the proceedure or the link for rekeying the locks on BMW Alu panniers?
Many thanks for any help.

Not The Same

Thanks for the info Steve but whilst the barrel is probably the same, the mounting seems different so I can't remove the barrel.
Does anyone else have any ideas?

I have just bought some second hand Aluminium panniers for my GSA and had the same issue.

Provided you have the key they are currently coded to and the new key your dealer should be able to do it while you wait for about £20.00.

Having fliped open lock, insert lock key and turn until you can see the brass flat pin, push with a flat screwdriver and lock barrel will come out. Insert bike key and some pins will protroud out. Either swap pins or file down edges until level with barrel casting. The pins are the same as door lock pins for old E30 3 series car so you may be able to get some spare pins from a local car dealer. They are numbered in either roman or arabic fashion, and you will likely need numbers 2 and 3 most.

Ray,
Iv'e done mine a couple of times.
A bent paper clip around the back of the barrel should push in the locating clip type thingy, while pulling gently on the barrel with the key.
If that fails, then come here & I will do it for you.
Mike.

I did this on my alluminium panniers a couple of weeks ago, it is a bit of a fiddle but is possible using a piece of bent wire/paper clip.

With the lock open ie so that the lid can be opened, look at the bottom of the barrel using a torch & you will see the wafer that holds the barrel in place, you will see it move when you insert the key but it won't move all the way flush, this is where the bent wire comes in, take the key out & use the wire inside the lock barrel to push the afformentioned wafer flush with the lock barrel then use the end of the key in the barrel to pull it out.

Then you can shuffle the wafers to suit your key. Watch out for springs.

There are only 3 different types of wafer no. 1,2,3, & 6 slot's I just ended up using five slots but figured that was enough security for my panniers.

Hope you can understand my description. let me know how you get on.

Re-Keying

Thanks guys, I will be trying it on Saturday. One potential problem is that I sold the previous bike (& the keys!) to which the pannier locks were keyed. Hope that makes sense!
