Re-mapped bikes. True mpg?

49.5mpg on the 'puter for PCV with custom map and since its been Hill Topped. Not surprising as the end result graphs are almost identical. (The PCV is available if anyone wants one for a TC.)

There must be more of a story to "first fitted a PCV, but then had it remapped at Hilltop" ?

If you had dyno runs on each - care to share the printouts and your impressions of each?

My 2p worth

I had my TC done and the LC and on the whole MPG improved slightly but here is the thing on a motorway at a good cruising altitude the MPG is piss poor and in the low 40s compared to a non motorway run ( and I don't hang about) in the 50s

I don't know the whole answer but overall a re map is worth every penny regardless of MPG

Nothing to see on the graphs, both are smooth without the typical 4k flat spot and the fuel graphs are also identical. In terms if ridability the PCV was slightly better at low revs and the hill top gives a slightly better top gear roll on. I only went for hill top because my dealer couldn't get past the missing O2 sensors when I asked them to look at a rough running issue that turned out to be dirty contacts.

mpg

I have a 2012 dohc triple black R1200GS not been to Hilltop yet !
For comparison I'm getting 52 to 58 mpg
Am I doing something wrong ?

For a start - You think that "triple black" means more than a paint-job............... :blast

Getting around 45-46 mpg on my remapped GSA ........about the same as I did before it got remapped :thumb2

Haven't had my 2011 single yellow remapped (yet). I generally get 44mpg on everyday running around (very little town work, rarely use Motorways). I've got one of those "ambient temperature spoofer plugs" fitted, although I disconnected it as I couldn't honestly detect any difference. Maybe I'll plug it back in and see how the tank-to-tank consumption is affected.

450 miles yesterday Mostly motorways but some considerable time stuck in Central London traffic. Averaged out at 45 mpg. I wasn't hanging about so happy with that. It averaged 47mpg before the PCV but that was almost entirely long runs with minimal traffic.

The O2 sensors are fitted, but that's irrelevant as I now remember the exhaust was off the bike for a major service and undo a cock-up I'd made elsewhere. So, I can't confirm or deny if they were connected when the bike was returned to me.

But resurrecting this one as I have just found a link the guy has put on his Facebook page detailing the exact work he did, with 2 videos of my bike being given the treatment.

It also has a review by myself.... that's a cut n paste from the post I did in the Ireland section of UKGSer.... Only bit he got wrong was regarding the bike being prone to stalling on a down-shift. This was always in the bike and not just after I'd removed the exhaust flapper valve and cat.

Again, just throwing up his explaination of what was done. I'd like to hear views of anyone here who fully understands all this wizardry

MPG for dirty triple black with sheepskin set cover

all time mpg: before 47.3 after 51.8

On my 2011 GSA that has had the Hilltop remap, I averaged 51.3mpg over 2700 miles in Europe.

These bikes can show air fuel fuel ratios of 20:1 or worse at low throttle settings. That massages the mpg figure at the cost of seriously cooking the exhaust valves. Saving a few MPG is not much value if it causes a valve to break.

I melted a valve on a 1200RT during a flat out motorway run a few years ago.

At the time I was told by a mechanic the AF mix was too lean.

BMW fixed the bike under warranty

47mpg from Hilltop'd 2012 GSA, super smooth, and pick up from idle is without hesitation, torque all the way

My 1200 just done 4500miles up to Norway and back. Overall MPG according to trip computer is 53.2mpg for whole trip. But range varied from 185/95miles per tank on way up to 220/240 miles when tootling round the country roads. Hilltop map was done last year no probs at all.

Had my GSA tc hilltopped a few months ago. Just back from a 2000 mile round trip to Black Forest. Mixture of long motorway days sitting around 70mph and lots of fast alpine type mountain roads and also town driving. Computer says average 58.8mpg. Checked this by the old filling up method and it seems correct. Can't complain with that.

On some longer distance runs in Europe, comparing a 2004 GS, a 2008 GS (with PC), and two triple blacks (one Hill-topped and the other standard) over- they all returned very similar range on each tankful, across different routes and different speeds. The lead bike (which changed) would always use slightly more fuel. If the Hill-topped bike was not the lead bike it would generally use very slightly less fuel than the other bikes, but we are talking very very slight differences even comparing between the original 2004 bikes and the later twin cams. If you are experiencing significant differences then I would say there is more at play.
