I have a 1981 GS with HPN forks and rear swinging arm and after a trail ride on sunday the back wheel is now covered with gear oil (nutty smell ??), lucky we had heavy hail showers coming back so rode home slow before I saw it. The bolts on to the swinging arm are spine type and are these hard to get off ,I can pop to a friends garage and use his airgun, do I need to?

The tool box had/has a 12 point ring spanner - that undoes mine.

Probably just the large seal gone - you cna replace it without removing the drive - pop off the wheel and brake shoes and it is there in front of you.
It could also be the brake rod O rings - the rod goes through the drive and has two O rings to keep the oil in.

I'd be looking before you try to remove the drive - much easier to fix the simple things on the bike - saves trying to keep them still on teh bench.
