Currently have the GSA in for it's service, and been told I need new rear disc and pads... But I'm confused...

The rear pads were already replaced no more than 6k ago, the bike has only covered 20k too, so to also need a new rear disc, is this about right?? They said it's at 4.16mm (the disc) and pads are pretty much goosed...

The front's are still original from when I bought it, they are fine, but the rear does seem somewhat excessive to me...

It's not even 2 years old yet either, so what gives??

Being quoted £300-something + VAT...

the brake system on these bikes seems to put the back brake on pretty hard automatically whenever you use the fronts.

my 06 gsa shagged it's first set of pads @ under 2000 miles from new. it also put a large amount of wear on the disc in the same time.

the dealer blamed the factory fitted pads & fitted sintered BMW pads (at my expense).
these lasted about 15K and never wore the disc significantly more.

i know they suffer from binding if not stripped and cleaned yearly at least, although yours sounds like its too thin not warped

if its doesnt fail MOT (if its due) then I guess you can opt to say no, or maybe buy the disc yourself and give it to the garage (will save a mint)

get a rear disc from James sherlock(advertises at thew top of this site, £60 i think it is, then get a set of pads and do the job yourself and save a fortune.

Thats what I will be doing next weekend.

warped

what dont help with the gsa is that most of the rear wheels have a lot of runout . if you put the bike on the center stand and spin the rear wheel you will prob see the disc pushing against the pads and opening the rear caliper as its of the sliding design . so as you riding it more or less in constant contact with the rear pads . get ya own disc and pads and save a fortune

The dealer will work on a very large safety margin for advising on brakes discs and pads. You will be well within limits so shouldn't worry.

If you feel you need a new disc and pads, get your Ferodo pads and rear disc from Steptoe on here and either fit them yourself or give Adventure Bike Warehouse in Salford a shout Jono there will fit them for you at a sensible rate.

If you do the disc yourself, be careful when undoing the old disc which is attached to the FD. It's very awkward and easy to strip the torx bolt holding the disc. DAMHIK:augie

Don't think the disc has anything to do with the wheel as the disc is hub mounted. Runout of the wheel relates to rim and spokes. Not hub!

If your FD is gone and there's considerable movement in that then there's a slight possibility of what you're saying being true but I, IMHO can't see any link whatsoever between 'untrue' wheels and disc/pad wear.

A warped disc will give the effect you describe though....

Some years ago a dealer presented me with a pair of heavily worn rear pads during a 6000 service, where for a further £65 + vat, they would fit some spangly new ones.

They didn't expect me to decline their generosity.

When I got home, the used pads in the caliper were not nearly as worn as the ones I was shown, but they may have mixed my brakes up with someone else's:augie

May be worth getting a second opinion.
