Rear Brake Pad Life?

How many miles would people expect out of a set of rear Brake pads ? (ABS if it makes a diff) on an 1150GS Adv. Mine were toast at 5.5K, I expected more than that somehow.

When I bought my GS it had already had a set of rear pads yet the front were originals. I thought this odd at the time. I've just had it servixced at 13,500 miles and the front are still Okay????

Yes I was surprised when mine wore out after 6,000 miles. I suppose I do use it more during the winter though.

The front have just been changed at 24,000 miles and I believe they are the originals!

Mine still have loads of wear left at 12000. But then I hardly ever use the rear brake.

I read somewhere that the rear brakes have a tendency to pick up more road crud than the fronts and are prone to drag. This probably causes the short pad life some people experience.

Rear Brake Pad life

On my bikes with Solo use
GS1150 - 19100 miles (changed in a BMW Dealers in Graz, Austria while on tour and the wear limiters had just appeared - in Yorkshire we believe in using every ounce of pad wear)
GS1100 - 22300 miles.

As for fronts - I have never had to replace a set at all and sold my GS1100 with 35,000 miles and my GS1150 with 24,500 miles and at each service,they were never below 2/3rds worn.

With the engine braking of a flat twin,who needs to use the brakes to excess,it's all about observation.

I do a lot of town work 50 odd miles a day so I live on the back brake & only get 3 to 4 k from my rear pads.
The first time I noticed the rear apitite for pads was as I pushed the bike from the garage it was making a grinding noise, to my alarm the pads were so badly worn that they had started to eat the disk as well. the pads were changed on the service 4k before, new disk & pads was the result.
I now keep a very close eye on both my front & rear pads.
I have had many bikes over the years & have always been heavy on the rear brake but none of my previous bikes wore out so quickly !

What Johnny didn't tell you was that he uses diamond coated pads and changes discs every 1000 miles.

I do a lot of town work myself.My rear pads lasted 4500 miles but Im still on original front but Ill need to change them soon as winter has took its toll on the pads, calipers and discs.Im still waiting for the new glasgow dealer to call back regarding a warrenty claim for it.I went up to see them regarding the warrenty claim 2 weeks ago.I gave him a list of issues mostly the finish and the front brakes binding.Said would contact B*W and ring back the next day.Im still waiting.

Another nice wee run up to Inverness, stop overnight at their "penthouse flat" and stuff yourself with a load of those burgers we all know you're so fond of.

I posted the same question about 18 months ago but only had answers from cruzing distance riders not commuters, I had comments about big feet and checking to see if they were hot after binding.

But I solved the problem, I stopped riding like a looney and having to use them at every stop and also doing the rear braking through traffic thing. I think this was the real colprit as I still ride with a silly grin

Cheers chaps, so it looks like if you ride like a courier keep an eye on rear pad life. ps my front pads are only half worn, if that. Though one of the discs has warped, waiting on parts. As to caliper siezing, the rear is as free as when it came out the crate, though I wouldnt say the same about the fronts...
