Following on from my last thread about getting new rear brake pads- Contacted Williams this morning about the 47 squid for a set of brake pads for my 1200gs, said i was'nt too happy at paying that much for a set of pads.:spitfire . I was informed that BMW now reccommend scintered brake pads rather than the original ones which have been found to wear out too quickly. Ok i said so what about the front ones?, what the reccommendation for them? Oh they are the same, but thats 47 poundS PER SIDE eek:
so thats 93 pound for the front, and 47 for the rear!!!!!!:eek
140 kin pounds for brakes:eek:
Is BMW havin a laugh of am i naive?????
Help me out here, is this right?

Buy Ferodo's off Steptoe better than OEM and less than half what you've been qouted for the lot. :thumb

I've just had my 12k service and had the rear pads replaced with the organic (oe) ones. They were £25, the sintered ones were £45. I went for the £25 option seeing as they lasted 12k. Mind you, the bike still has plenty of meat left on the front pads......

Yep I just had to pay £180 (including labour) to have the front and rears changed at a Dealer :spitfire This was the first time I've had to change pads after 18k miles. They never mentioned that there was a option of cheaper organic pad otherwise I would have gone for those :spitfire

You can buy EBC HHs (which I think are sintered) for £20 from Motorworks.

Is it not the 'organic' pads that are wearing out as if they are made of blancmange?

The first set on my 1150GS (same sized pads BTW) lasted nearly 20k miles. The second set lasted about 3k miles.

organic?

free range more like, the way they disappear when you're not looking.

Is the problem the rear pads of the linked brake set up ? I have non-linked non-abs and have done 18k on the rears.

The organic pads come as oe from the factory. It seems that some people get acceptable wear life out of them and others can get very little. My neighbour had his rear pads replaced at 4k, yet as I've said above, mine have lasted 12k.

Go figure....:nenau

The pads that I had which lasted 20k miles were OE when the bike was new in 2000.

The pads which lasted 3k miles came from a BMW dealer in 2005.

Same bike, same rider. I cannot believe that they were the same pads.

Exactly the same for me! Bike from new Rear pads lasted 12K Miles, then the next set lasted 2K Miles before wearing down to the discs! Dealer replaced pads and the marked discs under warentee as they agreed that this couldn't be right. Bike is now on 23K miles rear and front pads still OK. When they put new rear pads at 14K miles they told me they were fitting harder pads.

Plot !!! Missing !!!

If your that concerned , Try a search about brake pad wear rates - This isn't the first thread, nor will it be the last.

Just fitted rear pads to my 1150 servo GS. 31,454 miles, the thinnest pad was down to about 2mm:D

Fronts still original, plenty of depth left on the wear indicator slots.

Mike Oszywa, changing pads is an easy job, possibly not if you haven't done it before. See if any of us live near you, if you're near me, I'll happily show you how to do it. Bonus of doing it yourself is that you'll know that they were cleaned properly.
