rear brake pads

Pads

Utter bollock I had 3 mates all done under warranty worn to metal at 3800 miles

:JB
Called in to dealer today, 10 days after dropping off worn out pads to see if they had an awnser from Bmw whether they would replace my pads or not. Awnser was no, pads are a service item and Bmw do not replace these under warranty. When I told him about Bmw UK replacing pads for customers due to premature wear he said don't believe everthing you read on forums. Dissapointed but not unexpected outcome. We always seem to get shitty after sales service in Ireland.

poor service

I took delivery of the bike on the 15th of March, I got the impression that dealer did not ask Bmw, just gave me the response he presumed they would give. I will see if I can ring Bmw myself for a more balanced response. I replaced rear tyre before my trip and had to go to a third party as local Bmw dealer could not even get a price on a new Tourance next. Booked bike in for 11000 km service yesterday and dealer could not even give me a price, says he will know in two weeks time when I booked it in for. I lived in Brum in the nineties maybe I should have stayed.

Take it you don't have another dealer anywhere near? Does sound like yours needs a kick up the behind! Perhaps you should mention that to BMW?

See my post above. Your dealer is a shower of shite.:rob

new pads but not yet fitted

When did you get the bike? August bikes onwards will get the revised pads.:rob Could be worth a word with your dealer.

I Brought some new EBC pads from NN due to hearing of premature wear, Mine has now covered 5000 miles.
I removed the pads today and if worn was going to replace them, but they still look good for another 5000, so a clean up and a bit of copper grease is all that was needed.

That's good to hear! How much do you use your rear brake? I only use my front brake although the rear wheel always has loads of brake dust on it. Bad habit I know

Not possible to only use your front bake on this bike, they are linked which is why you're getting dust on your rear wheel.

Lightly rest your foot on the rear brake lever then give the front a good handful.

You'll feel just how much the rear is being used.

Don't forget that your rears are linked with the fronts, you pull the front lever and both brakes will operate, albeit the rears at a reduced pressure!

linked brakes

On this bike you will always use some rear brake as they are linked, I think if you have it set in Enduro pro mode then it changes the bias a bit, but on a bike it is always good practice to use the rear as well as the front as it steady's / stabilizes the bike.

This is the first linked brake system bike ive owned and to be fair it feels good to me as I always used both brakes anyway, but on this one I only need to worry about using the front lever unless I need to stop quicker using max pressure.

any way the main point is it looks like the premature wearing pads was only on a small amount of bikes my bike was made in May.

I've done 8,000 miles since March, including a trip of 2,000 miles plus around the Vercors Alps where brakes get used a lot! - still probably got a couple of thousand miles left in the pads.

I've had the new pads and there deffo thicker than the originals. Not sure if there from the same supplier but the back plates are a silver colour.

Was "advised" to fit new pads at the 6000ml service, got some from Motorworks (£18 as opposed to £47 from Motorrad) and fitted them(5 mins)
Originals had less than 1mm usable still left..

Same as sometimes a shit gearbox is more shit shifting technique, premature pads wear can be attributed to shit position of feet on the pegs. My dealer showed me pads he had to change at... 300 miles, twice. They were down to about 1 millimeters. Turned out the guy was riding the brake pedal instead of the peg. Without going that far, it a pilot rides with the insteps on the pegs instead of the balls of the feet, he could be unwillingly applying a constant light pressure on the pedal, which would be sufficient to rapidly wear the pads. Not necessarily always the case here, but worth exploring. Just saying.
