My GS1200LC has now done about 8.5k and I've gone through two sets of rear pads, anybody else had the same problem? I seem to remember the when the air cooled GS 1200 first came out it had a similar problem.

Do you use the rear brake a lot? My dealer warned me that because of the linked brakes, actually using the rear brake on purpose would wear the rear pads faster. I still don't know if this makes sense though...

I needed new set of rear pads at 6.5k on mine. Not quite in the sane league as your good self!

Don't understand this brake pad wear problem, my mates GS (not Watecooled) gets through rear pads every 7 or 8k mine at 23k is still on its original pads, must be the rider....

First set were almost down to the metal in 600 miles. Just changed second set after further 5000. They were only half worn but like things sorted and safe for start of season as I have a busy year planned and will keep the old ones for spares.

Dealer thought there cud be some burrs on the new discs that destroyed the original ones. Certainly the wear rate has eased considerably since then. I got one of the first ones in March and ran it in over 6 days during snow and salt and lots of other crap which I think made the caliper stick and caused the excessive wear.

I prefer the ride to flow and try not to use the brakes if I can help it. It also stops people riding behind and using my brake lights as they have to read the road for themselves. They soon get themselves into trouble trying to keep up with a GS but going faster than their lack of observations can cope with!!

I never actuall use the rear brake pedal. And I made a mistake with the mileage, it's only done 7.5k so its even worse. I remember my dealer (Cannons) telling me that it was the way I was braking, he suggested that I was braking to gently with the front brake and that was causing too much pressure going to the rear. Yeah, Madmartin before you say it "what crap". And Toddmeister at 6.5k that marginal with servicing at 6k intervals.

BMW had a problem with rear pads when the bike was launched, they were very soft,

I had mine changed under warranty at around 950 miles, the modified set were still good at 10,000,

Maybe they're still using the old pads at times just to get rid of them ,who knows!

I'd take the bike in and explain to the dealer you must have had a set of the soft pads and could he change them under warranty please,

Cheers , Graham

I very rarely use the back brake.... or so I thought.

On the Nav V under 'My Motorcycle', the 'Last Ride Analyser' tells me in 295 miles I used the front brakes 478 times and the rear 516  could this be due to the linked brakes?

Mine rear pads were replaced at the 12,000 miles service, still have 50% wear on the front ones at almost 14,000 miles - so I'd guess that you either use the rear brake an enormous amount or something else is wrong.

My rear pads down to less than 1mm in 1700 miles and replaced under warranty by Robsons. They said the discs were a little rough and the pads would smooth them off. I would not consider myself as being a heavy braker

Dealer telling you your'e braking too gently with the front brake. Give it a rest. Now that is crap. Design fault, but probably soft rear brake pads. Swapped mine for ebc. Didn't even bother telling my dealer. Would have cost more riding down to manchester than swapping them myself. £15 from motorworks.

My rear pads were down to 50% worn on my first service (750ish miles), the service manager said that there were burrs on the rear disc and BMW were aware of this, if the pads are completely worn by 4000 miles they would be replaced under warranty, Im on about 1600 miles now and they are at 75% worn.

Nothing new... My 2007 mod ate original rear pads for lunch since new. Changed to Brembo / SBP pads. Pads lasted longer, but at 83 000 km the rear disc was thinner than allowed.

Never touched the rear brake pedal when moving!
