Quick q for the experts

I've just been doing a quick inspection of my rear brakes, there worn but oddly

The piston is well forward and the pad nearest to the piston is worn, about 3mm remaining

But the pad near the hard stop - the outer pad

is almost on the backing plate about 1mm

remaining

Any Ideas why??

My theory from witnessing the same on all my Hexhead:

The caliper is cantilevered with the sliding pin at the front iirc. As pressure is applied the caliper flexes rather than staying parallel, leading to uneven wear on the pads as one gets more bite than the other. Any wear on the sliding pin or it’s bore only exacerbates the uneven wear on the pads.

Could be complete bullshit, but I always saw one pad wear more than the other, with a slight taper in pad thickness as it wore.

Brembo pads are both the same thickness, but Lucas/TRW and EBC pads are thicker on one side than the other so they wear evenly.

Ive had a few issues shall we say with my rear brake (on twin cam) Ferodo pads overheated and broke up, EBC pads lacked breaking power but after rebuilding the calliper and using Brembo pads it’s working fine but i have noticed one pad is wearing down quite a lot and will soon need changing.

Have you removed the caliper and checked the pins it slides on are clean and well greased. They can get very gummed up if the bike is used a lot in the winter.
I know this doesn't explain the back pad being more worn but it wouldn't hurt to look at it.

It's quite strange how the front pads wear as well. Mine have always worn more on one side than the other. I rotate the pads about halfway through their life to get the most from them. 🤭

You rotate the front pads? Please tell me the front pads!
