R1150gs, 63k miles, 2002 .

Failed MOT due to warped rear disc. This was original so 63k miles not bad.

Today I fitted new disc and pads. Got everything finished and couldn't turn wheel due to binding.

I've eventually narrowed problem down to the rear caliper carrier is binding on the new disk. (Old disc was <4mm, new is 5) Even with no caliper in place, only the carrier, it binds. I'm wondering if the caliper carrier has warped too and if a different carrier might solve the problem? As I tighten the carrier I can see it "cant" and bind on the disc, hence wondering if it's warped.

At the moment I plan to file some material off to enlarge the gap in the carrier where the disc runs, see if that sorts things. Good idea or bad idea? There is quite a bit of corrosion so I'm hoping it will help.

I've looked on Motorworks and they only seem to sell carrier and caliper, even second hand, so I'm trying to avoid splashing on all that if I only require the carrier

I'll call them Monday, see if they would just sell me the carrier.

Bit odd that the carrier is binding on the disc. Have you assembled everything properly? The carrier shouldn't 'cant' when you tighten everything up - the caliper just slides on its pins.

Thanks for replies

Steel lines already on bike.

Caliper sliding pins all cleaned and greased, pistons moving easily.

Yes carrier and caliper all assembled correctly. It definitely does "cant" as tightened.

Disc was mounted correctly as was wheel. However will double check this tomorrow.

Some have a spacer between the wheel hub and the finaldrive mating face.
Cant remember enought details right now, think it is on abs equiped models.

Now resolved.

I filed off some material in the carrier gap the disk runs in and used a thin washer to space the carrier inboard a bit from where it attached to FD. (If that makes sense). Passed MOT retest with flying colours.

I know this shouldn't have been necessary but was only solution. Visually couldn't see any distortion of carrier, but hey ho all is well now.
