How long you getting from yours?

Just had 18000 mile service (bit late, bike has 19000 on it now) they said my rear disc was now down to 3.9mm wide (below minimum)
Also the second set of pads are just about done now too.

Is there a better disc on the market? I'm a bit miffed the thing has expiered so soon, I've never had to replace one on any other bike I've had :nenau even the bikes that went over 120'000 mls didn't have to have discs replaced

Any suggestions?

I think mine was under the wear limit at the 30,000 mile service - I replaced it with a Wunderlich "wavy" one and some Steptoe sintered pads.

On the standard disc you need to regularly clean the holes of dust.

only two sets of rear pads i was going through them every 6 thou

My rear disc went at 18k, but after about 4 sets of pads. I complained to BMW and got the disc as a "good will gesture".

My argument was that only idiots would design a disc to wear so quickly hence it must be faulty material hence it was a warranty claim.

This was my complaint too. Rear pads were wearing out in less than the recomended service interval (4K vs 6K). I wonder how many people dont check pads as the bike is dealer serviced. On any other bike (that I can think of) this would be a reasonable assumption

Just replaced the rear disc on my R1100S at 64k. Still on the original front discs. <20k for BMW discs sounds poor.

Only other bike I have owned which needed new front discs was a Kawasaki ZZR600 however they were known for having thin discs which warped (as mine did) at lowish mileages e.g. approx 15k in my case. I think I repalced these discs with EBC and never had another problem for the time I had the bike.

Looks like I need to get on to the boys at NOG. See what there prepaired to do. (need to get on to them about a fork seal 'been replaced twice and still leaking')

BTW Monkey, was your bike out of warranty, and is it likely they'll be a issue over me fitting non standard replacement pads?

i used 3 set of pads on the first disk witch last 30 000 mls:
#1 10000 mls
#2 11500 mls
#3 9000 but i remove disk + pads for new one before complete wear

i install a "wave "model from BRAKING
the performance is the same but the disk seem te have a better wear (without bending due to heat)

Bike was in warranty at the time. I was using OEM pads.

You must use your brakes too much:eek: Just got rid of mine with 13K miles still on orginal front + rear pads still with plenty of life left:nenau

Hmm, just before I was about to post about rear disc appearing to wear faster than the front, I did a search.

I'll shut up then. 30,000 miles on original pads & discs front & rear. Although the rear is ridged around the O/D. :D

Double whammy here, just realised this is the 1200 forum. Mines an 1150.

Four weeks old and 1400 miles and am continually cleaning brake dust off the back wheel.....................
