Well, just had the 30k service done and apparently my rear disk was down to 4.1mm (service limit is 4.4mm). Now, when you bear in mind how few brake pads I've been through I'm a little surprised about this. My rear disk on my Blackbird (used more because of CDBS, went through pads every 6k miles) lasted over 50k miles before needing replacement.

Now, I'll admit that this is a high milage run bike, but of that milage about 80 miles a day are motorway and 20 are town. Town will wear more than motorway, but even so....

Is 30k reasonable for a rear disk to wear out?

My rear disk was shot by it's 12000 mile service - which is shocking. I assumed that it was disguising some other problem but I bought a good used one off Steptoe and everything has been fine since then.

I think it was caused by the time I ran my rear pads down low (not to the metal though) - since I've been keeping a eye on them and changing them well before their 'time', and everything seems OK.

Hmm, interesting. I mean, pads are going to be softer than disks, so you'd expect to have to go throguh a number of sets of pads before the disk itself. I can only think of 2, mabybe 3 sets of rear pads I've gone through. Admitedly, the fist two were in rapid succession.

Curious.

Disc wear has increased dramatically since asbestos and a number of other nasty substances were removed from brake pad compounds. I used to have an Audi 80 that wore out a set of discs every other set of pads. Fitting sintered pads will accelerate disc wear too.

Because mine keep warping, and getting replaced by BMW, I've little idea of disc life - though my rear one has been on the bike for about 46k without appreciable signs of wear (MoT'ed a fortnight ago)...

Mike:)

If your getting through your rear pads quickly - this'll be because of the disc wear. I was getting though pads at a horrific rate until I realised what was going on. Since I've replaced the disc, the pads are wearing at a more normal rate.

Got my replacement rear disk and pads from www.ks-parts.de very good prices and service. It's in german but you'll figure it out - just click around on the pictures and you'll get there.
